I don't know for sure how much Dumervill would want to come here if it means getting out of his stance to play WOLB instead of 4-3 End. He's good enough that I wouldn't care that it keeps Mercilus a backup....but my other concern would be keeping him away from AFC rivals. It's bad enough that we seem to be watching an erosion of talent, I would hate to watch someone like the Pats grab him. Happy to see this happen to the Broncos of course, right along with the Ravens disastrous cap reckoning.
Exactly what I was going to post about him standing up. I have no doubt that he could do it, but would he be willing, and possibly for a lesser contract?
Ravens are "negotiating" with Dumervil according to the Denver Post. The Baltimore Ravens are also negotiating with Dumervil, according to an NFL source. Dumervil received a strong recommendation of skill and personal character from Ravens linebacker coach Don "Wink" Martindale. Dumervil registered his career-best and NFL-leading 17 sacks in 2009 while Martindale was his linebackers coach. If the Broncos are unable to get a new deal done with Dumervil, they are expected to pursue John Abraham with Dwight Freeney and Osi Umenyiora becoming backups to the team's backup plan.
They only have around 5.5 million in cap space. Pretty much no way they could sign Dumervill and Reed. Both would have to take way below market value to sign.
He was, the year he had 17 sacks. I don't know what his preference is, but playing a 3-4 OLB isn't foreign to him.
He's not a fit here. Mercilus is a rush only guy so whoever plays opposite has to cover. Dumervil isn't that guy.
Rumored that Reed might be moved to ILB. Dumervil is better than Mercilus...no reason to not sign the guy because we already have a pass rushing OLB. We still need another one.
First round pick sitting on the bench? If they move Reed inside then Mercilus or Dumervil have to cover.
If they get Dumervil, He would along with Mercilus be the OLB, and Reed will have to go inside and learn a new position...but thats something i'd rather experiment with at the beginning of the season, knowing full well that Cushing needs help...Reed might be the second best LB on the team right now...Might as well teach him how to play inside... JJWatt, Draft pick NT, Smith Mercilus, Cushing, B.Reed, and Dumervil on the outside would be one of the best front 7 in the league...ooo the possibilities...
Per twitter, Reed says he'll make his decision "this week" and is said to be "leaning toward" the Texans. If Dumerville is happy to go back to standing up, he'd be a great fit, and I'm fine with Mercilus going back to the bench. Wade plays a lot of 4 man line nickel, so a guy great at both would be a big asset. Ravens may be more desperate than us to get him though - their LB corps has been cleaned out.
With what money though?? Don't the Ravens only have something like $5.5m in available cap space right now?? I could be dead wrong on that, but for some reason I remember reading that somewhere. I doubt Dumervil takes THAT much of a pay cut to play there.....especially since they have gone head first into rebuilding around their offense.
Well, it's probably one reason he was so furious that his agent botched the fax. He's 29 and battling a glut on the market (Umenyara, Freeney, Abraham, etc) and a huge mess of cap space dried up during the free agency frenzy a week ago. I can't say for certain, but I would think that most teams aren't going to offer him anything above $6M/year. If he wants to be on a playoff squad, he can probably forget about the cash. And vice versa.
