I love the Wal Mart comparison. So, by that logic, if someone that is poorer than you steals from you, then they should be able to get away with it right?
dude your anti corporate rants make you look ridiculous. i like you a lot, i understand where you are coming from, but this makes no sense

anyone who has worked in retail knows that stealing causes prices to go up (at least that's what the evil corporate overlords tell us)
blah blah blah. If I'm in Wal-Mart or some giant corporate store, it's not in my best interest to put myself at any sort of risk to help them catch a shoplifter. I genuinely don't give a **** one way or the other, and they can take care of themselves. If I'm in grandma and grandpa's small town Popcorn store, then I'm going to speak up quickly if I see someone ripping them off. And yes, of course, anyone who is poorer than I am has the right to steal everything I own. They can steal my giant strawman first (it's in the living room).
i agree but it that's not the way your post came off, you said it like you would purposely not tell wal mart. i agree the question requires more context, someone shoplifting out of wal mart though i generally wouldn't care either. in the last year, because i've worked part time in a dubious industry, i've known some heroin addcits who had to shop lift to support their addiction. in this time i've gotten to know some of wal mart's policies. they have people undercover always in blue shirts so the workers can spot them. they generally will catch you a second time if you steal a lot, believe me if you stole enough that it requires you to carry a basket, you think you got away but you didn't. one of the addicts claim as long as you are in the store they technically can't charge you with shoplifting till you hit the parking lot.
either way it's not worth my time nor is it my responsibility or problem to deal with that. And I doubt strangers ratting out shoplifters here and there in general will have a noticeable effect on salary loss of walmart employees.
I used to work at urban outfitters a few years ago. You'd be surprised by how many people shoplift. Back then urban didn't tag a lot of their merchandise so it was incredibly easy to stuff something in your bag and just walk out. As an employee i probably saw at-least one instance everyday of this **** But we were taught to never ever directly accuse someone of stealing. I used to catch these assholes by offering to help find a size or checking them out. Once this guy was about to make off with a pair of very expensive jeans and I asked him if he was ready to check out. He walked with me to the front and then made up some ****ty excuse about forgetting his wallet in the car, needless to say he left the jeans and walked away. Long story short, don't work in retail if you don't like dealing with assholes like this everyday.
I've only witnessed shoplifting first hand one time and I still regret not saying anything. I was in a Valero corner store in high school. I was going in to pay for my gas and there were these two kids (probably around 13-14 years old) right in front of my buying slushies or whatever. One of them grabbed a lighter from one of the displays by the register and slipped it into his hoodie sleeve. It made it worse that the lady that was working the counter was the sweetest old lady that I had gotten to know a little bit. I know they weren't really stealing directly from her, but that still made it worse in my mind. I said nothing, let them get away with it and it still bugs me.
Pretty much this. Major chain stores like Wal-Mart should have the resources and personnel to take care of these problems themselves, no point getting yourself involved. And lol at prices going up cause of stealing, couldn't tell if that was a joke or not.
So you would feel the same way if you were the victim? IOW, if your home was broken into and someone witnessed it, you would be ok with them minding their own business and not helping you bring the thief to justice? I go back to my original point. Some of you seem to feel it is ok as long as the person doing the stealing is not as well off as the person (or company) that is the victim.
How is getting my house broken into and multi million dollar corporation losing 10 bucks worth of candy bar that same thing. Yeah, technically they are both acts of theft and property loss, but the actual effect on the victim is night and day. Why would I waste my time to rat out a thief, when the victims are some millionaire tycoons losing a few cents. I'm not even saying it's morally correct for me to think like this, but it's just not worth my time to care about the so called victim when his actual loss is literally negligible. And btw, I never said it was okay to steal anything. I just think to go through a whole process of ratting some thief is not worth my time and basically has no overall impact on the grand theme of things.
That's easy. They are both a crime w/ victims. Shouldn't matter how much money the victim has. Because the next victim could be you.
What do I have to gain from reporting them... nothing. Maybe the shoplifter notices you're ratting them out, decides not to steal, and follows you out to your car. Not worth it. If it's stealing from a place like walmart, I could give 2 ****s. If it was a little mom and pop store, I might say something.
