    Didn't want to clog up the GARM with another thread but I'd like to ask;
Josh Smith or Paul Millsap? Who would you want for the next few years manning the 4?

The last time Millsap was a guy who can defend was never.

The last time Millsap was a guy who could shoot better than 38% of his jumpshot was in 10-11 season.

Josh Smith? I can understand. Millsap? No way in hell, unless he comes cheap, like 3yr/$25mil type money.

Smoove is the better player. Advanced statistically speaking, both are Morey's type of players. JSmoove is the best player on Hawks and Millsap is the best player on Jazz. RAPM 2012

Obviously Morey's dream targets are CP3 or D12. Chance of signing CP3 is nil. D12 is next to impossible. I just don't see D12 walking away from 30 million. These two FA's will make Rockets one of the favorites to win a championship. If JSmoove will sign anything less than 40 million/3, he will be a Rocket next season. The alternate choice is Millsap. He is a bargain at 30 million/3. By my estimation, JSmoove will improve our win total by 8 and Millsap by 6 by upgrading our rookie PF position. The only way I see Morey sits still is if the price is too high to make it a 'risky' signing (Smoove or Millsap asks for max w/ player option).

I don't believe Morey will 'wait it out' for the 2014 class of FA's. Here are my reasons:

    1. Everyone on the Rockets (except Harden) are on a three-year contract or less. By waiting it out one more year, Asik, Lin, and Parsons will have one year left to make a run. If any of those three blossoms into an all star or borderline all star, they would want a bigger contract. Parsons especially will get paid, if not here, them someplace else. The window is just too narrow to wait it out.

    2. This current team will get better next year, but without any help from FA and by developing our PF rookies instead, Rockets will not be a legit contender next year. If we remain status quo, 5th seed the best. With addition of JSmoove, we become a bonafide contender.

    3. If you look at our roster, we don't have a bad contract. By that I mean, anyone is movable (tradable). By acquiring a FA at below market price this summer, if things not working out, Morey can always move him for an upcoming FA (Love) at 2014 or 2015.

On a side note, if Andray Blatche is available cheap, he can be an excellent backup center/PF.

I agree with most of what you say except point #2. This team is currently fighting for the 6th seed and is the youngest most inexperienced team in the league. If this team were to remain together AS IS and were allowed to carry the chemistry (that had to be developed as the year went on - causing losses) into next year, in addition to Lin, Harden, Parsons, Motiejunas, Asik, Robinson, Beverley, Smith, Anderson - (and hopefully Terrence Jones developing into a rotational player) all still improving as players, you have a nearly a guarantee that this is a playoff bound team! I see this team fighting for top 4 in the west. Sure, there are a few additions we can make to upgrade the team but if that core remains intact, we are going to be very happy fans most of the season next season. Oh yeah, and don't forget Delfino, but he is who he is, not going to see any development in his game.

I do think Millsap will come in cheaper, I'm hoping for a 1 year rental with 2nd year team option.

Anyways somebody has notice his defense this year.

Also let be realistic with a career FG% = 0.517, Millsap will get some postup looks and be used in PNR. There no way he going to be used exactly like PPat. Heck even Dmo gets postup looks.

Smith career TS% is below average and has never been good or even above average in any season. I think the offense will suffer with Smith because he is a chucker.

Millsap's basic and advance stat look better across the board. They're both 27.

I love reading intelligent posts on this board. This qualifies. CP3 and Howard are not coming to Houston and all this ridiculous talk of getting both of them is just that. So of all that is left Josh Smith is where my money goes. He is not too old and has shown an ability to play the 3 which makes him very versatile.

Yeah he is not a a full time 3 but what he has shown this year is an abillit yo guard other 3's and shut them down. I hate that he can't hit free throws but he brings so much else to the table and I want someone to backup Parsons. Plus I think him and DMo on the floor together works.

    Think about the rotation...

    Center - Asik, Greg Smith
PF - Josh Smith, DMo, TRob
    SF - Parsons, Josh Smith
    SG - Harden, Delfino
    PG - Lin, Beverly, Brooks

That's a solid rotation that can compete with anyone. Milsap helps as well almost in the same way so he is my second choice. He can play the 3 and 4. Doesn't rebound or block shots as well but he does shootfreethrows better and overall better.

By the way what's all this stupid drama about whether he is making it up or not. Every point he makes is exactly what I would expect the Rockets to be thinking. Whether he heard it or is just using some intelligent analysis either way it's good info. So quit being stupid b****es complaining about it and just quit reading if you do not like the info. I for one love insightful posts and even if th OP is making this up it makes so much sense and it's nice to hear some info that backs up what I have been thinking.

True or not, I especially loved hearing the Kelvin Sampson thought. I just don't think McHale is head coach material. He gets away with screaming and pouting at the team because they are young but also because they are professionals but they are professionals and that style of coaching doesn't work long in the NBA. I know he lost his daughter and I can't help but believe that is affecting him still and something he really needs to deal with in a less stressful situation. But beyond that I do not think he is the best choice going forward and hope the Rockets release him this off season.

I don't like the idea of Morey micromanaging the coaches like that but I do believe McHale has made some mistakes that may have cost us a couple of games and it seems he is not in Morey's good graces. Especially after the trades when it was clear he id not want them and that Morey was ecstatic about them.

Kelvin Sampson as Head coach and Finch as head assistant should be a good upgrade going forward. So I hope the OP is right about that info.

Good thread with some good discussions. So give it a rest if you think it's bs. It's logical BS if it is. I that's a hell of alot better than some of this stupid idiotic posting that sees us with CPS and DHoward next year.

I loved watching Sooner teams when Sampson was at Oklahoma; close to the way I enjoyed watching Hoosier teams when Knight was at Indiana. They were very dynamic and creative on offense.

Knowing Morey, he will be there midnight at Smith or Millsap's door on July 1 with his famous lowball offer.

It would be so great if we got Josh Smith! We'd have a guy that could lose every close game for us and score 16 points on 17 shots every game! No one chokes in the clutch like Josh Smith, lock him up now Morey!!!

Oh, I hope so. Lowball offer, that is.

The missing link is that Jeff is out there and unless C's offer Rondo in an SnT for more bucks than DM the GM will pay then KMc will be lobbying for Al to become the returning (Jeffer)son.

What makes you think Sampson would be a better head coach then Mchale? Not trying to say he is or isn't just want to understand why you think he is better.

Harden will be holding the ball during clutch time though.

Not if Josh Smith has anything to say about it. Of course that's just another reason why going after Josh Smith would be the worst possible idea. People (outside of Atlanta) seem to think he's some great player but in reality he's not much more than TRob with the confidence to jack up shot after shot despite being a terrible shooter and to constantly try to handle the ball despite being terrible at it. I get that he can dunk and his defense is good, but that's really all he brings to the table. IMO we'd be better off just keeping TRob around and developing him.

Isn't defense exactly what this team needs though?

I would prefer not to give him the max (I don't think he's worth it), but if Morey decides to give it to him I won't complain.
