Jason La Canfora @JasonLaCanfora Ownership from Texans, Ravens expect to meet with Ed Reed's agent at league mtg in AZ next week, Ravens coaches and officials have been... Other teams still calling as well to inquire. Likely to come together at meetings. Ravens will make their push. Bottom line: Texans offer wasn't substantial enough to preclude Reed from leaving w/o signing. Door is still wide open for the Ravens
Are there any quality safeties left besides Reed? I do not want to overpay for a 34 (about to be 35) year old safety.
At least "next week" means maybe tomorrow. League meetings go from the 17th to the 20th. Do the Texans have some other scrubs they can re-sign in the meantime?
We'll see if Reed gets any other comparable offers #knowyourworth but the Texans look bad. You don't put on a production like they did unless you're making an offer he'll say yes to on the spot. If the Texans don't want to overpay and be smart with their money, that's cool. But you don't pull the **** they pulled at the same time. And maybe you don't put all of your eggs in one basket which is how it looks to the outside. http://insider.espn.go.com/nfl/freeagency/index?year=2013&position=36 Bernard Pollard anyone?
I'm not hating on him, but it just seems that defensive coordinators have made adjustments that limit his effectiveness and I don't know if he's capable of adjusting to that. Settling for someone whose a less efficient passer but better athlete is an unlikely scenario, but what was once a team with a bright future with intermittent dominance on both sides of the ball has been reduced to a skeleton unit of nice players whose future largely depends on a progressively gun-shy pocket quarterback with a contract that extends through 2016.
Maybe they thought, "Yeah, we'll roll out the red carpet, pick him up in McNair's private plane, wine and dine, bring his (former Miami Hurricane) friends/teammates out too, and maybe he'll sign for less!" Ha, I don't know. Didn't quite work.
Pollard left the Texans on bad terms, no? I'm 50/50 on wanting Pollard. His viciousness was fun to watch, but his coverage sucked when he was here. He is like a stronger Demps.... I guess we could go after Woodson? I'm not to sure how much money he is looking for though. Regardless if Reed comes here or not, I would hope the Texans pick a safety in the draft.
ZERO interest in Pollard unless it is cheap (vet min) and it's to serve as the sub package safety that you bring into the box. No problem with Woodson, but he has issues staying healthy too.
Not a lot of enticing options out there. If Reed is "washed up and too old", what are the likes of Charles Woodson and Quintin Mikell? Pollard isn't coming back. Kerry Rhodes? Michael Huff? Dawan Landry? Madieu Williams? Not much after that. If there is a guy who "makes sense", Gerald Sensabaugh? Only that he played for Wade.
If we miss on Reed I expect to bring Winston back and a stop gap at reciever, thus allowing the draft to go primarily to the defensive side (what's new).
Not suggesting that myself but it bring s up an interesting question . . . are we going to upgrade our backup QB Rocket River
We had to give him the red carpet treatment because we don't have the cap space to give him a blow-away offer. It is what it is.
