Why is the 'N' in Nguyen silent?

    So wait. Is it pronounced wen or guyen? I have had a professor with the last name Nguyen for a semester and I still don't know how to pronounce it lol.

    This is how I learned to pronounce it:

    Pair "when" with a word that ends with ing - like walking

    Say the ing word with "when" (without a pause between the 2 words) - walking when - and listen how the ng sound flows into "when"

    Now take the ng sound and put it before when

    It's probably not a perfect pronunciation but it will get you in the ballpark

    Or if you see Nguyen under electricians or mechanics in the yellow pages, LOL yellow pages, 80% they will screw you over. Don't trust a Nguyen to fix your stuff!!
