Im looking to buy a gun by the end of this month but dont really have an idea of what to get. I've shot guns before but dont have a lot of experience with them. I do know i want either a 9mm or a .40. So far what im leaning towards is a Glock 19 or a Smith & Wesson M&P. My price range is about $550. If you have any suggestions I would really appreciate it.

Sig Sauer SP2022... putting the glock to shame. Just recently picked up one and I absolutely love it.

    Glock-19 gen 3 non C. I regret buying the 'C' version.

I just bought a Glock 22 .40 for $500. It was my first gun. Shot it a couple of times at LOF and it felt great. Really easy to use and maintain.

Go for the Smith and Wessen M&P Shield 9MM
Should have been rated gun of the year.

Nice gun. My fiances father bought this gun when I bought my Sig 2022. It shoots great and the trigger reset is on the money. I just love how 9mm's shoot.

I bet it did. I don't even go to the GARM anymore because of them. Well done.

That was actually one of my options. I've shot it before the only thing i didn't like was how the grip felt in my hand

You should go visit a range with a wide selection of pistols and try them all out. When I was shopping for my first pistol, $600 was my target range too. After shooting dozens from different calibers and several different makes and models, I was about to give up. I was being guided towards run of the mill glocks and what other people liked. The second to last gun I tried was the HK P30. I immediately loved it. I ended up spending much more than I wanted, but I am at least thrilled with what I have.
That said, find something YOU like. Pay a little more if need to be. Make sure you put some rounds through one before you purchase it and make sure it fits your needs.

If you are trying to decide between a 9mm or .40, I would go with the .40

I have more confidence that it would put an intruder down vs a 9mm

But go and shoot both and decide which you like better

Good advice. Don't assume that a hand gun someone else loves is going to be a good fit for you.

While I prefer the super soaker, my younger son really loves the Nerf darts
