I'll be shocked if they don't get a deal done.

He can. But for this team, I don't think it's that overrated. They need someone that has actually experienced real playoff success, and guys will respect when he talks about it. They also struggle to take a team or situation by the throat and own it. See how they choked homefield advantage away, or both games at New England.

They need his presence as much as his on field play.

They need breakaway playmakers on the offensive end of the ball even more....they need blocking on the right side of the line....and they need consistent pass rush.

I think they need all those things more than they need Ed Reed. I like Ed Reed, and I'll be happy to root for him in a Texans jersey. But if this keeps us from addressing those other things, then it's a mistake.

Well they don't need those things more than they needed to keep Quin or sign a replacement.

Their secondary wasn't that good last year and won't be good again next year as it stands now. They get beat too easily by teams that are willing to throw on them.

Right now, with Quin gone and no replacement signed, here are where I put priorities:

    Defensive back
    Playmaking WR
    Offensive Tackle
    Defensive Back
    Defensive Back
    Linebacker
    Defensive Tackle
    Tight End
    Defensive Linemen

They need a safety, a nickel CB and a dime DB right now.

I think they already have an agreement....

I don't think the Texans would be doing this:

    <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p><a href="https://twitter.com/search/%23BullsOnParade">#BullsOnParade</a> RT @<a href="https://twitter.com/sonofbum">sonofbum</a> ER is here-We are about to talk in my office</p>&mdash; Houston Texans (@HoustonTexans) <a href="https://twitter.com/HoustonTexans/status/312300185516654593">March 14, 2013</a></blockquote>

if they didn't already have something in place. Because they're going to look like played fools if he hops on that plane and signs with San Francisco tomorrow.

I don't think they're going anywhere until they address deficiencies on the offensive end of the ball.

I agree with you, but they also won't go anywhere with Shiloh Keo, Demps and Brandon Harris getting the starter snaps in the backfield. As it is right now, that's where they are. Think about that for a minute. All three of those guys are somewhere between below average and horrible and they would be your starting safety, your nickleback and your dimeback.

It won't matter how good your offense is with that backfield. They HAVE to sign a safety to replace Quin, and then they have to get a WR and then they have to add to their defensive backfield.

I understand all that...just saying that Ed Reed doesn't solve our problems. All his ferocity isn't going to improve this team from last season.

Cush coming back is big for the defense. Happy about that.

And I'm not saying you don't go get a safety...but maybe when you only have very little to spend to address alllllll these needs, you don't go out and acquire a safety who may be paid more for his name than for his game at this point of his career.

I agree that Ed Reed doesn't solve all their problems. If he is the only player they add, that's on them though. I think our defensive backs are equally a problem with our offense right now and it's unacceptable to me as a fan that they can only address 1. They have to address both. If they can't, that's pathetic and is a damning statement about their ability to work the cap and draft.

    Yep..we'll see what happens.

Not a lot of gamechangers available on the offensive end of the ball that we'll have the $$$ to sign.

Which brings me back to my larger point about the Houston Texans...I believe they've already peaked.

You won't get any argument from me on any of this, but in the salary cap era every NFL team has holes. Even the champ. They desperately need a number 2 WR that can take pressure off Andre and give Schaub a third option in the passing game. Brooks should be able to be the answer to the RG question, and Brooks Reed/Mercilius should be able to aid the pass rush. Plus, you still have the draft.

Putting money aside, I have a real concern that they don't believe in "gamechangers" on offense anyway.

All the talk you hear from people who "are familiar with their thinking" is that they basically scratch any receiver off their list who isn't big and able to block. Apparently they have no interest in a gamebreaker in the slot because it isn't their system. It's ridiculous if it is true.

I think the peaking argument is wholly contigent upon the run game. That to me was the biggest step back we took in 2012. if they can return to the production in previous years a lot of other holes will be a lot less glaring.

If we can get Winston back, that will likely be better. The holes just weren't there last year like there were the year before.

How in the world could we afford Winston and Reed? And I"m guessing if we did that, there's no room at all available for a WR2. We'd be inviting Walter back.
