We can't resdeal ture Antonio he only has one year left on his deal, he can extend his contract to reduce his cap figure or he can be cut. I love Antonio but 9 mil is ridiculous. Antonio can get paid in the open market so right now its extend to a back loaded deal or chunk the deuce
Again, I'm no capologist and have no idea how this restructuring of contracts works in the league. But couldn't we just back load his contract for 2015? I'm only going by the numbers you gave so I'm assuming he has 2 years starting from this coming season. What I don't understand about restructuring is that you can do that one offseason and still the next cut the guy to save even more loot. This is all so confusing. Sheez!

There are rules about the way it works. When you restructure you typically are converting base salary into signing bonus because you can spread a bonus out over the life of the contract. But you can't just load it up in one year. You couldn't basically dump all his money to next year, but even if you did, you'd be in a jam because that money would be a huge cap him next year even if you cut him. I'm sure they could buy some cap space on Smith, particularly if they want to keep him this year AND next. They might even be willing to add a third year to the deal to spread money out more if they think he'd be cuttable still in year 3. Regardless, I think they want to see how much they can accomplish without doing anything to Smith's deal.
Thanks for the explanation. I definitely agree with you. Looks like we'll have a sort of domino effect from the Ed Reed situation. If we can get him signed and whatever final number that amounts up to will depend on how much restructuring and cutting we'll be doing from there on.
Reed is still pretty damn good. At his age he can decline at any point in time, but right now he is very good. Do not under estimate the "help" veterans are getting now thanks to some very creative chemists out there.
Smith has a Base of $6MM and a bonus of $3.5. We could save the full $6MM this year depending on how creative they get with re-structuring.
I'm not convinced reed is an upgrade over GQ next season but I'm hoping they take the plunge. Hopefully barwin doesn't find a deal and we resign him too. Cut smith and sign Aso. I would be on board with the offseason moves if that's how it goes down. Barwin had a bad year but I think he still a very athletic edge rusher who will produce moving forward.
True, if you want something done you can make it work. I was just speaking in the most practical sense. But, of course anything is possible.
I hope we dont sign him. Even tho he is a great player but he is old. i think we should invest into someone a little young like S from Lions. Reeds legs might give up on him in couple years. so instead of giving him 4M / Year we should give a 4.5 M to an young gun who can run and catch up if beaten.
Who said anything about a 4 year deal?? There isn't ANYBODY advocating a 4 year deal here.....most people want a 2 year deal with, POTENTIALLY, a team option on the 3rd year. That's it. And he's 34, still has great speed, and is one of the best field generals out there. If you're saying you'd take Louis Delmas for multiple years over Ed Reed for 2, that's just insane.
Actually a 4 year deal is fine with me. He's probably retiring in two years. A long term deal where you give him guaranteed money in a singing bonus that is spread out is ideal. When he retires in 2 he still gets all that guaranteed money but the base salary in years 3&4 is void. That could be really beneficial for the cap.
Why is everyone stuck on someone young. When you sign a player in FA you typically will not have them 3-5 years down the line. You use the draft to rebuild and FA to fill holes.
