It's a blow to lose a good friend. I've lost a few. Does it really matter how they go, when you get down to it? There's a spot in your life now that's empty. Memories will fill some of that void, but the loss remains, and I'm sorry that's happened to you.

Maybe I should have said a some lettuce vs a big mac to REALLY emphasize the difference in which food is healthier...since for some reason y'all don't really see it. I said ham sandwich because it was the first thing that came to mind.

But going back to the point I was making, you have to have the discipline to say no I shouldn't eat this. I've been eating crappy lately so this time I'll have a nice Salmon fillet with brown rice, some seasoned asparagus and steamed broccoli. Distinctively healthy enough?

    lmao...harsh man.

OP, It really sucks to have friends pass so young. I lost a friend not too long ago that was 28. He was unhealthy as well, smoked, drank and ate a lot of fast food. Was not overweight though. Puts things in perspective for me. I don't eat fast food, or smoke.

However, microbrews will forever be my addiction.

I think you're taking a positive from your friend's death by learning a lesson from it.

Hopefully this lesson can grow into positive choices for you. Could you ask for a better legacy than helping another person live a better life? I can't.

    Condolences for your loss.

By having the courage to discuss this with other friends, you may in fact prevent this from happening again. There's no need to be judgmental. Maybe there's aspects of your own diet, you find you can improve upon due to an open and honest discussion.

My condolences on the loss of your friend!

By your post I get that you're trying to make sense of the death
of your friend, as he was still very young (37yrs). Your statement
of (still how do you not think to yourself) implies that if he would
have kept his weight under control, just as you took care of your
situation (disease) he would still be here today. I don't think you're
being judgmental or what you're thinking is wrong, you're just going
    though your own grieving process.

You shouldn't feel remorse for what you're feeling or thinking,
it's perfectly normal and understandable under the circumstances.

black people are notoriously unhealthier than the rest of the population. before i found out i had diabetes i used to eat anything i wanted but i used to justify it by jogging 21 miles a week at memorial park.

i had a kid unexpectedly and i stopped working out and ballooned to 240 from 185 in 2 years. then diabetes took 100 pounds off in the next three years and here i am trying to get back healthy.

sometime's its just genetics, my grandfather and four of his siblings lived into their nineties but i think i started to rely on that and it caught up with me.

long story short, we can go at anytime, life is fragile, but that doesn't mean we should ignore what we can control.

i really haven't talked to anyone i'm just getting updates on facebook, don't want to ask his really close personal friends. its a group of about 15 to 20 of us, i've been knowing him for probably 10 years.

anyway, i think heart attack. someone posted something about two people passing of natural deaths, but they didn't specify who died of what.

last thing, its not as much as he never addressed it in as much as no one seemed to ever address it with him. now i don't know if privately other friends ever addressed concerns about his weight, i never did, its just one of those things you kind of accept and not notice. i know i have friends that even though he and i weren't the closest in the group, everyone is pretty open at calling each other out for all kinds of reasons.

i'm not the only one in the group who has at different points tried to improve health and lifestyle. i guess we just kind of accepted him for who he is and didn't think about it but i guess when someone is up walking around and most of us are under 40 years old no one ever really thought about it. i hope we can all learn from this.

Everyone should be taught how to keep themselves healthy. It should be a class in school, **** history or art.
