Yep, Mexico is North America. Thanks for the geography reminder. So, to sum up the point you pretend to miss, I've had to hear Italians, Mexicans, Guatemalans, and, er, people from El Salvador (Salvadorenans?) refer aloud to black people as "n***ers", and I didn't take too kindly to it, especially since it was brought up so casually in normal conversation, as if I'd just jump in there and add, "Oh, yeah, those blankity blanks..." As far as "there is no Central America": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_America Between Mexico and Colombia, there is. At least in NORTH American classrooms. Geez, there's always one.
Maaannnnn... WTF, the Central American region both you and I are referencing is both in North and Central America... (I guess Wikipedia adds what Latin American countries teach, too). I am more than sure you've also "had to hear" people from the United States, from Spanish-speaking descent (what do you want to call those?) or European lineage who look Caucasian also calling black people as such. So? Please don't tell me that only those groups you mention are the ones that call black people that way. Why can't you find a polite way to ask those groups not to say that term? You can, I don't know, say: "Can you please not refer to black people that way? That term is derogatory and infuriates [or whatever adjective you feel at the time] me?" You could avoid a confrontation or violent outburst instead of giving them a "stern, WTF" look. Don't you think? I would.
It's pretty simple. If you're white, you're white. If you're black, you're black. If you're anything in between you're Mexican.
Hispanics are very, very racist. They get it from the Spaniards. Probably the worst group of people in the history of man. **** the Spanish.
I remember teachers of my older sis and I teaching us that Mexico was part of Central America. That is until NAFTA. Then they made them North Americans.
Didn't realize that he was a Jesuit until I heard it over WFUV (Fordham's radio station). This is pretty ****ing historic, I thought it more likely for the explusion of the Jesuits than for a Jesuit pope. Hopefully the church moves with the times on a few issues.
