well, if they had kept Quinn in the fold, they'd have had less FA money to spend on those other holes. It really doesn't change your scenario much as long as there are Quinn-level guys in FA or draft....and I think there are. I just don't have faith in our ability to pull starting-caliber FA's aside from huge signings. Or immediate starters in the secondary out of the draft
If they wanted to keep him, they could have always used the franchise tag. I just don't think the franchise tag is normally used on players of Quinn's level (ie - a slightly above average player at his position).
I'm with you on the last part...which is why I feel the way I do about this. I don't want rookies starting at safety and WR next season. Truth is...it probably doesn't matter anyway. I think (and I hope I'm wrong) that we've already seen the best this current batch of Texans has to offer.
Say Quin got $5 mil a year, we can go out and sign a 1 or 2 year stopgap for much cheaper (ie Quinton Mikell) who produces close to Quin's level and draft another safety (which we likely would have done anyway since Manning is up after next year). As long as we sign someone in free agency that is capable of starting, I'm not worried...that wouldn't be keeping us from filling other holes. Overpaying Quin would be keeping us from filling other holes. People get so caught up in the wheeling and dealing early in free agency that they forget that good players can be had in the 2nd tier and also after cap cuts in June.
Do the names Johnathan Joseph and Danieal Manning mean anything to you? I have decent faith in Rick Smith and company. So far we have watched other teams overpay for our free agents. I am fine with that. Now we just need to wait a little bit longer and scoop up the diamonds in the rough like joseph and manning that did not get ridiculous contracts at the outset of free agency.
towards the end, they did make chad henne look like a cross of erin roygers and regular season patricia manning so it won't be the end of the world. I'm guessing Safety will be a concern going into the draft. I think we can all agree on one thing...no to keo.
players of that caliber are well outside the range of what it seems we will be able to bring in this offseason.
hence, "aside from huge signings" in my post that you quoted. Joseph wasn't a "diamond in the rough". And we don't have the space to go nab anyone of their caliber (in $$$ at least) this offseason. I don't have faith in our ability to get FA's in the mid-level range of what we'll be able to offer
I think GC is way above average, personally and I hate to see him go...and am disappointed that wasn't resigned. It's not the end of everything however. 1) Texans still have a very good safety in the secondary (manning). 2) Safety is a position that talent can be had relatively easily 3) this move does open up a little money that would seemingly be used in other areas...in theory With the first pick, a quality starting safety could/should be available. That still leaves plenty of WR and/or LB skilled players in the 2nd and 3rd.

Huge loss by the Texans...we are walking backwards...as others around us are moving forward... Lions have done quite well... Anyways regardless...I wanna thank GQ for excellent play for the past couple of years...really had his best season last year...keep up the good work...
If losing Quin means getting a little worse a DB (and I mean a little) but a lot better at ILB, OL, and/or WR then I'm willing to see how it all plays out. I'll never forget how they seemed to make something out of nothing two offseasons ago. And that same offseason, GQ made the switch from corner to safety. Maybe it's Brandon Harris' turn. I can can dream, can't I?
I don't see it as any significant loss. He mostly played as a hybrid DB/LB close to the line of scrimmage and was always getting burnt up field. Considering the Texans didn't even offer him anything officially they realize he wasn't worth what other teams would fork over. I'm guessing they would have been comfortable with closer to 3mil/yr than the 5mil given up by the Lions. They can grab a stop gap vet free agent and draft accordingly in the middle rounds this year to fill the need. Pretty good safety depth this year in the draft, and a lot of safety fa's on the market.
Just because one doesn't make the pro-bowl doesn't mean they're not essential to a team winning.....see 2012 version of: Anquan Boldin, Ray Lewis, Colin Kaepernick, Carlos Rogers, Vernon Davis, Torrey Smith, Joe Flacco, (just from the 2 teams in the Super Bowl)etc...
To take it a step further, What we need to help out DB's is a LB that can drop in coverage and blanket TE's which was one of our largest weaknesses this past season. If we can draft an ILB that has coverage capability then we don't need a DB that plays like a LB close to the line of scrimmage. Theoretically when then can stop playing single high safeties which destroyed us late in the season and go back to running two high safeties to take out the deep threat that we were so inept at defending.
