Maybe it's the Texans homer-ism in me but letting Quin go is going to hurt more than anyone else... Damn things aren't looking good for us in our path to the superbowl, and we haven't even played a game yet.
If Connor is in fact going to Philly, that doubly screws us.I was fine with letting Connor walk. I thought he was one of our more expendable FA's. I would've preferred keeping Reed at OLB and drafting an ILB in the first two rounds. I still kind of feel that way. But now with a hole at safety, keeping Connor would maybe allow us to address other needs before LB. But we might be losing out on both Connor and Quin simultaneously. I get not wanting to be a real player in free agency. I get wanting to re-sign your own guys and building through the draft. I don't necessarily agree with it 100%, but I get it. But it looks like we're 0/3 on that front. Day 2 and our offseason plan has already been blown up.
Championships are still won in the trenches and at QB. Foster and Johnson are great but we can stay in the hunt without them so long as we have a foundation. I'd rather we build for longevity and focus on drafting well rather than overpaying for non-star caliber players like Quin and Casey. Whether or not Schaub is good enough is for a different thread, but our window is not "closing" because of Dre and Foster. Our offense won't go to complete crap as long as we have Schaub and a solid o-line, and as long as we have JJ our d-line is going to be damn good. I'm not saying good skills players aren't necessary, but I'm not on board with overpaying non-star players to go "all in" for 3 years and then having to suffer through several years of lousy football. The model to follow is the Steelers model -- if you draft well and don't overpay, you can always be in the hunt (with a down year here and there). Of course the x-factor is at QB, but again that is an argument for another thread -- we could be wasting our breath with all of this if Schaub is going to continue be the guy he was last year.
Oh God I hope not, I'd rather they play Eddie Pleasant than to get Sensabaugh, that guy is a dumpster fire in coverage
Yeah, it's a misstep I feel. One that will haunt them. I understand what they're doing, but if you're going to go down this path I'd rather just sign guys like Quin and just let Schaub walk. Keep the young defensive and offensive personnel intact and go find your QB of the future. It's almost easier to do that than it is to plug 21 other positions with Super Bowl caliber talent. It's like we're willingly stepping on a treadmill of mediocrity to bide time during the Schaub/Johnson era. Schaub isn't good enough to sustain this approach, might as well reboot this around Watt now. Foster too, I'd prefer Quin & McCain or a WR2 over Foster in all honesty. Maybe even Winston and Quin over Foster. It is what it is with him, he's a RB, financially we've made him out to be more important to us than he actually is. All the fans wanted to sit in his lap (fair enough) and McNair paid him for it. Now we have a guy with 2 years left as opposed to a safety with an entire future ahead of him.
Losing GQ, if in fact true, is a real kick in the balls. Barwin...eh, likable guy an all, his lack of play making last year was a big let down.

I'm happy the Texans aren't going the route of Indy and KC (spending stupid money on replacement level guys). But they still need to make smart moves.
The Texans were 11-1 a little over three months ago, with Barwin, Casey and Walter having a near-minimal impact on that success. Have we really grown *that* entitled in just 14 weeks? Is this Boston? They've won 24 games the past two years. And the core is still in place. If Cushing is healthy, that's a better offseason acquisition than some overpriced, overhyped free agent. Can you type "Dream Team?" Games aren't won in the spring. If Schaub doesn't self-destruct again, they'll be a 10+ win team, in the mix for a top seed, and a legitimate SB contender. Two days in freaking March doesn't change any of that. Bucnha Chicken Littles.......
There's a bidding war going on between Houston and Detroit for Quin. Pancakes says Detroits offer is not significantly bigger than Houstons. We'll see what happens
