get this. when I started going to Houston duplicate studios fifteen years ago, they said, "it's great to see the younger generation taking an interest in Bridge. The young people are important for the success of these studios."

    haha

Word of advice: Do not ever underestimate the play of the Blue Hairs.

crazy to remember i took a bridge class in middle school...what were they thinking?

My mother was a serious player & would host nights of play. I've witnessed Dr. Zhivago losing his s**t over his partner's bidding.

You non believers should stick around and I'll tell you a cool story about the World Championships where France ruined the sport for everyone, because they cheated.

    Those French bastards.

At age eight, I was refilling the peanut bowls for my "serious" mother's SAYC parties. While we were setting up, she'd teach me bridge.

It is the most beautiful and difficult card game invented. And we invented it in the United States, contributed to greatly by the slave culture and their games.

Do you also play biriba? I know it's not same but we play it, and a lot of her friends did as well...much less tension i suppose.

This story is from the autobiography of Bob Hamman -- the best American bridge player ever.

First let me explain what change to bridge tournaments the French caused. The greatest thing about cards is the social dynamics of the game. The talking and visual interaction. Think, Dominoes.

Talking had already been disallowed at tournaments, because you can exchange too much hidden information to your partner during bidding and on defense. So you have bidding flashcards from 1 club to 7 NT, and pass cards, etc.

The French still cheated. There are cameras at these games, of course, and experts have studied the film and never figured out how they cheated. Because of that, the ACBL implemented screens at tournaments, so not only can you not talk to your partner, you can't see them.

We know they cheated, because they made too many perfect defensive plays than an expert would ever suggest, unless he knew what was in his partners hand.

The other reason we know they cheated is because they came out of nowhere to beat the powershouse Italian and American teams, plus the perennial semi finalists....England and Holland

    Those French bastards.

    WTF!?!

My whole understanding of the game was based on how sympatico one was w/their partner.

I'll stick with biriba/conquin quatorze/gin rummy. Your tribe is off the reservation as far as i'm concerned :p.

^^ we are just talking tournament duplicate.

we still talk **** in social play!

It is. You just have to do it without cheating. Verbal and visual queues are not cool. The French suck!

I would like to learn to play bridge.

I am a great Hold em, 5 card stud, and 3 card poker player (imo ;) )

I also like playing hand and pinochle (although the one I play doesnt seem to match up with the standard version)

    Anyway to learn?

I play bridge, but I'm at a difficult stage. I can do basic bidding but I don't always pick up the signals my partner is sending me with their bidding. I've gotten better, and when I play with friends or family they can give me pointers after the game.

But I don't like playing with strangers because I don't want to screw up people who really know what they are doing. I love playing bridge, but because of this problem, I haven't been able to play that much lately.

Defending, IMO, is one of the hardest parts of the game and is often neglected as many people want to play the hand. However, your better duplicate players are those who might play one or two hands the whole night and still have over a 50% game.

The best tips I can give is to try to count the cards of each suit that have been played and attack the weakness of the dummy. It is not a bad thing to make declarer ruff in the dummy as it reduces his trumps. The more time you play, the better feel you will get on what to lead.

Yeah. It's nice to have a table of four friends. But that sometimes creates an environment of no improvement because y'all get used to each others incorrect bidding

It helps to have a patient partner and to play strangers as a team. One tip it's worse to not bid when you are supposed to than it is to overbid
