If the city is full of fat guys then suddenly I start to look better. Same for OP. So rather than hating, just enjoy it.
Yes, Houston has a lot of fat people. But ever been to San Antonio? It's 1,000 worse. Also, pretty much anywhere in the South/Southeast is laden with obesity. Poverty levels are higher in places like OK, LA, AR, MS, WV, KY, etc. so nutrition levels are lacking. Diets in the South/SE consist of cheap fast food and sugary snacks, rather than balanced diets with fruits and vegetables.
The hot weather discourages outdoor activities for many people who are already inclined not to do much physical activity. Combine that with tons of great places to eat and it's easy for people to get lazy and pack on the pounds. There is also lots of dietary misconceptions out there. People see commercials claiming subway is supposed to be healthy for example, then order a foot long meatball sub with cheese and bunch of high calorie sauces and condiments, a coke and some 300 calorie cookies for their side and that was their "healthy" meal for the day, so they eat whatever they want for dinner. It also doesn't help that almost every restaurant serves portions that are big enough for 2 people. It takes a lot of discipline to break bad eating habbits, and sticking to a work out routine when you are really out of shape is equally tough.
If the country ever experiences a food shortage(like in North Korea, where op is probably from)it would be very advantageous to be fat. A perfectly healthy person with 30% body fat is gonna survive longer than a puny little guy at 8% body fat. The only problem would be if all the skinny dudes teamed up and ate the fatties....I'm sure doomsday preppers wil be stuffing their face after reading my post.
http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/databriefs/db50.pdf This is not true at least for men: prevalence is generally similar at all income levels, however, among non-Hispanic black and Mexican-American men those with higher income are more likely to be obese than those with low income. Higher income women are less likely to be obese than low income women, but most obese women are not low income America is one of the few places I have been where poor people are fat. In general if you are poor you are starving.
If you stay in Houston long enough, you might get fat just like Daryl. http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showpost.php?p=7717236&postcount=28
