It almost seems they stole the plot right from Raid Redemption. But I've heard mostly good things about this reboot. Apparently the character is portrayed much better this time around

Movies I wanted to see today: The Master, ParaNorman, Looper (well, next week)

Movie I got dragged into seeing with friends today: DREDD

I've never seen the original movie, never read the comics and don't even like action movies... but I actually enjoyed this one. It is pretty much the sci-fi version of The Raid:Redemption--just replace the martial arts with guns. It was stylistically violent (and gory) and had just enough story to give foundation to the action; though, not so much story to where it got cheesy.

You could tell it was relatively low-budget--being confined to a building avoids all the costly CG for creating a futuristic world--but they made good use of their effects. The slo-mo drug sequences were pretty cool and actually made use of the 3D I think.

Anyway, I went in expecting garbage and was pleasantly surprised. Don't read too much into my comments or your expectations will be too high.

I personally loved it. One of my favorite action movies in a while. Very entertaining, good action, great visuals (this is one of the very few movies I'd recommend seeing in 3D, I usually hate 3D), good acting, etc.

I know the plot was similar in a lot of ways to the Raid, but during the movie I completely forgot about that (it plays out pretty differently anyways)

Great action movie. Not going to be your favorite movie of the year or anything, but very entertaining and worth seeing.

Anxious to see Karl Urban return to the Riddick universe. The way the last movie ended...I'm curious to see how his interaction with Riddick's character will play out.

Friend of mine saw this and said it was pretty solid. Might have to check it out.

I have heard good things from the people who saw this, but not many did only bringing in $6 million on opening weekend.

It actually turned out really good. It's ultra violent and stylish, but also has a small bit of emotional complexity thanks to Dredd's rookie partner. They play off each other perfectly I thought, especially for a character (Dredd) that's pretty much a rock. Definitely doesn't reinvent the wheel, just provides a fun ride.

Might be one of my favorite action movies ever. Never saw The Raid so I don't know the comparison, but I went in with average expectations and was blown away. Urban kills it.

This was not bad. I was expecting typical sh-ty Lionsgate B film and instead I got a really great syfy B film.

Major props to Oscar winning cinematographer Anthony Dod Mantle. The work he did with all of Danny Boyle s films (Slumdog Millionaire, 127 Hours, 28 Days Later) & Lars Von Trier (Dogville, Antichrist) is evident. Very inventive.

I also enjoyed the electro songs and score by Paul Leonard-Morgan. They worked well with the images.

As a comic book movie this was better than all of Bryan Singers films and certainly better than the new Spiderman.

I agree. It really nailed the feel of an 80's dystopian future movie, which was the heyday of Dredd as well.

LOVED the soundtrack. Again very retro synth 80's. If you liked the music check out the musician Lazerhawk.

Hard to compare it to spiderman or xmen. Apples and oranges.

I really hope, by some miracle of its success on bluray, that a sequel gets made. I wanna see more of this world.

Agreed. It was ripped by the critics but I feel like dredd fans and casual movie goers really liked it.

I saw it recently and enjoyed it a lot.

It skipped a lot of cheesy stuff and went directly into a great story. It didn't try to be too much. Liked it MUCH better than the one from the 1995.

    ripped by critics? what? http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/dredd/

it did fine with critics. it just didn't do well in theaters because the marketing campaign was terrible (the trailers made it look really bad)

I really want a sequel. or actually, I think a series with HBO or Netflix or BBC would be best
