This is interesting. I want to say it's just a matter of small sample size, because Brooks was certainly a horrible finisher at the rim even in his MIP season. And he could draw fouls either to make up for the lack of finish.

I still like him as a matchup play though. He's a load to defend for slower PGs as he did Blake and Fisher in the 2009 playoffs. And he can create his own shot, something this team sorely lacks on nights when Jeremy Lin has no shot.

From what I've seen, I'd cut TRob to make roster room for AB. It'd be another case of addition-by-subtraction at the PF spot, because it would give back-up minutes to TJ, Ohlbrecht, and Smith.

If Brooks were playing consistently like this, why would the Kings have let him go?

My guess: Tyler Honeycutt or AB isn't really signing here.

Oh, I know we won't give up on him that quickly. But what I'm smh at is another too-small PF, who can't shoot, and who has more turnovers than points.

Honestly, I haven't seen any of AB this season to know how he's playing aside from reading box score fodder here. But at this point, the Kings are a mess. They're making moves for reasons that have nothing to do with on the court presence and impact. That they're moving on from AB is not necessarily an indication of how he's playing.

pretty sure lin's job is secure. all brooks gonna do is jumpshoot his way into a steady 6th man role where he's supposed to be.

Question is, how does he fit our defense?

Guys, while I'd be near the front of the line of "defense first" people on this BBS, at some point you just have to stop and realize that sometimes adding a (potentially) significant offensive weapon to a poor defensive team may just be a better solution than adding "some guy" who's a better defender but who is a far inferior overall player who will never see the floor.

The Rockets have a decent plus-defender at the PG position in Beverley. They don't need to add another defensive PG right now. They also chose to add Tim Ohlbrecht as C depth over any other front court options . . . at this time.

Bottom line: You don't let a player like Aaron Brooks (who the Rockets actively pursued this past summer) slip through your fingers just for the sake of saying you added a better defender at another position. Sometimes--and I HATE to say this--more offense may be better than slightly better defense.

P.S. The Rockets still have roughly $5 million in cap room, only a small portion of which should be used on Brooks. While they can't add a playoff-eligible player who is still on another team today but is waived later, there are other options they can explore (i.e., Euro guys) between now and the end of the year. Not holding my breath on that, though.

The only problem with having Brooks on team, is that at some point this season, Brooks will have a string of great games, and the "Lin/Brooks should be the starter" debate will make this board almost unbearable.

It will happen because Brooks is "really" good at certain aspects of the game. Brooks is still the same player that almost won us the Laker's series. The only difference is that now we and the coaching staff know what his ceiling is which is which on average is somewhere below that.
