Casspi never became a free agent. Never worked out a buyout since HOU didn't want to sign him (went with AB).

Carl Herrera mentioned it, but Casspi didn't get bought out.

RT @LU_SPAD: Liveanalytics by TicketMaster: 26% of sports tickets go unsold. That's 50M tickets and as much as $900M in revenue #SSAC13

10% improvement in efficiency for 5 men on floor for an NBA team who are trailing over same 5 winning during a game. #SSAC13

"#SAP is gonna integrate video with http://NBA.com new stat portion featuring on the website" #SSAC13 @SloanSportsConf

Darryl Morey: NBA teams are "nowhere" compared to where they are going to be. Predicts offences will be totally different in 10 yrs

Mark Cuban: Some NBA GM moves after the new CBA makes you wonder if "they have even read it." Toronto? #ssac13 #RevengeoftheNerds

Compelling analysis about sending 1 more player to the offensive glass on missed jumpers results in 4 more points per game #SSAC13

"Are the leagues best rebounders conceding shots to get in better rebounding positions? For some, yes" @kirkgoldsberry #SSAC13

Good for anti tanking RT @StatsMan Speaker suggests "draft points" to teams instead of draft picks. Would be like freq flyer miles.#SSAC13

@timkawakami Prof says opp shoots 38% w/Larry Sanders dfdng paint. David Lee opponents? 63%. #SSAC13

The most effective way to lower activity around the basket is to influence the opponent to shoot elsewhere, hence, the Dwight Effect#SSAC13

Before the #Magic traded JJ Redick, they tracked how many season ticket accounts they could potentially lose with JJ. #SSAC13

Three big themes: We overweight recent results . We're risk averse. We rely too much on perception rather than base rates. #SSAC13

Best remark on #bigdata is by @hackingdata: “Every says somebody is doing big data, but in the end it's no one.” #SSAC13

Question asked: What other regression models do you use other than ticketing? Answers provided: None. #SSAC13

Stan Van Gundy said sometimes it's good to just admit it and say "We got lucky." Agreed! #SSAC13

"You can do everything right and not win. But you can’t do everything wrong and win." - Zarren. Boom, nailed it. #ssac13 #TrueHoopMIT

Via @drjefflo: SVG wants Rondo to adjust when he returns. More likely Bill Russell is going to start playing for the #Celtics. #SSAC13

Stav Van Gundy REALLY hates players who don't rotate on D. His desire to brutally kill them is the main theme of this Sloan panel#ssac13

Are advanced statistics "TMI" for HoF voting? Peter King thinks so.#SSAC13

.@PacersKev and RC saying that medical stuff, rest and recovery is the next frontier for analytics. #SSAC13

Daniel Coyle, when asked how prevalent he thinks doping is in the NBA and NFL: "Much more than anyone thinks." #TrueHoopMIT#ssac13

BA: Can't understand defensive player efficiency without understanding the system- SVG, Mike Zarren#SSAC13

RC Buford: "Don't evaluate individual players on defense, evaluate the breakdowns." #SSAC13

Stan Van Gundy making a good point, it's hard to evaluate player's defense w/o knowing the team's defensive scheme #SSAC13

SVG context: take what you think is a good D player in a good system, put him with a coach that doesn't teach D, he'll fail #SSAC13

Van Gundy: "the reason Indiana, Memphis, and Chicago are the top 3 defensive teams is because they refuse to downsize their lineup."#SSAC13

Great stuff from SVG: it doesn’t matter if a guy helps by getting steals because he’s breaking down the culture of a team’s defense.#SSAC13

Stan Van Gundy continued on Defense: J.J. Redick as an example -- he's not the best defender, but is consistent & can be relied upon#SSAC13

SVG just called out the Wizards for playing McGee, Blatche, et al too many minutes. Playing time isn't synonymous with development.#SSAC13

#SSAC13 #BALL what does Stan mean when he says 9 teams are trying to lose games?

Dmo is a 7-footer but he's no better defender than the rest of the players aside from Asik.

To be fair, SVG also conceded that it comes at the cost of their offense. No statement was made explicitly whether this was beneficial or not in his opinion.

If he believed it was overall beneficial not to play small, then why did his lineups typically have at least 4 perimeter guys in Orlando?

SVG said this during one of his many long spiels during the basketball analytics panel. he was commenting on player development. contrary to what a number of posters think on this board, SVG thinks that just giving players play time isn't good player development. his opinion is that one develops young players by telling them what to do and what not to do if they want to make it on the court. they get play time by doing the right things first whether it's making the correct rotations or improving shot selection. wizards with mcgee and blatche was the example he used of just giving guys a ton of minutes and hoping they develop.

I generally agree with him. If you're constantly letting a young player "play through his mistakes" you're just allowing him to develop bad habits.

funny that you mentioned this, and I'm not trying to claim that I know whether SVG believes in a small or big lineup.

the example SVG gave when talking about being lucky was how he ended up playing hedo turkoglu and rashard lewis as his starting lineup during the magic's 08-09 season where they made the finals. he claimed he didn't want to play the two together and the 3 and 4, but an injury to battie before the season started forced him to do so. it worked well.

he said that he gets called a genius for this lineup, but he was just lucky.

Your optimal lineup is roster dependent. Besides Asik, none of our bigs can defend worth a lick. Hence it's not a foregone conclusion you play big. Especially if you have good offensive perimeter players.
Great thread. Better than 99.9% of the threads here. :)

Leads to the question, what (theoretical) effect would there be on revenue if ticket prices were lowered exactly to the point that every game was sold out.
