Why doesn't Terrence Jones get playing time like other rookies?

I agree. TJones needs to play. From what I see he has great athletic ability, handles, a shot (more than trob)...rebounds well...honestly him not getting any pt is one of the biggest things bothering me about our rotation. Trob needs d leauge to develop.

Something we aren't seeing, that coaching sees in practice. (Kind of like how we are just now seeing that DMo's defense is terrible)

TJones must be a huge attitude problem, I can't really see why else he hasn't touched the floor.

Why is Robinson playing ahead of him? He hasn't even been in Houston long enough for the coaches to really see him in practice.

I can think of 3 possible reasons:

    1) T.Jones' wrist injury. But T.Jones suits up every game and is not listed as medically inactive so it's hard to say how much this contributes to his lack of minutes.

    2) Robinson has impressed the coaches in practice. This would be the best reason. To my eye, his man defense is decent as he seems to have good lateral acceleration and keeps his man in front of him. His rotations and general positioning seem suspect, but his 2nd game was notably better than his 1st. Based on his stats this year at Sac, he should be a better rebounder than anyone else we have at the 4 (though he hasn't shown it so far).

    3) T. Jones not there yet on D. It's clear the boy can score. But can he defend and rebound? He seemed promising in pre-season, and McHale noted that he was the most NBA ready of all our rookies at that time. I remember a game early in the season where McHale was ticked that Patterson was not rebounding. He put in T.Jones - and T.Jones continued to do just as bad. I haven't seen T.Jones in an actual game in a long long time (even in garbage minutes) so it's hard to say where he's at.

Yea, TJones has shown good defensive principles so far. He doesn't get lost as much as Greg or Dmo which is a great sign. He also is almost always the first big down the floor - however he usually plays with Beverly, who doesn't throw those full court passes for easy buckets. He also shows good rebounding fundamentals with boxing out. He also fights for offensive boards, though yesterday he was the only one trying to offensive rebound (multiple guys boxing him out). He still looks incredibly lost on offense...though that might have to do with the Kings not having him move around that much as we have him now. Not too much read and reacting in SAC when you just watch 2 people massage the ball until they throw up some trash shot...

tldr - good defensive principles, good rebounding fundamentals, solid motor - always trying to get the offensive boards and first one down the floor, lack of understanding on offense (very confused), still misses a few rotations on defense. Looks to be an enforcer type in the end..

Also, to address Tjones vs TRob - TRob has played regular minutes so his performance is easier to predict. He has already had several double doubles this season..Maybe confidence in TRobs game. OR WRIST INJURY?!?!?

Ackerman is clearly covering for McHale's biased tendencies.

This ain't Summer League. If Jones had shown more in practice than D-Mo, he'd be starting now. Simple as that.

Agreed. I figured we have a merit/hard work based system. Jones has payed his dues in the D League, I'm assuming he's practicing hard, I have no idea why he can't get on the court, even after trading away our 1st and 2nd string players at the same position. Meanwhile, Robinson gets on the court with virtually no understanding of our system. I'm sure Robinson will pick things up over time, but I dont understand why we haven't given Jones an opportunity.

Hey, I'd love it if Jones were good enough to start for us. But so far, I've seen nothing in the minutes he HAS gotten at the NBA level to justify giving him more. Evidently, McHale feels the same. As many mistakes as D-Mo has made, he's also had some moments that make you think he could be a legit scoring threat once he gets his feet wet.

Terrence Jones played pretty well for the limited minutes he did get throughout this season, dude has handles, athleticism, and can defend/rebound. I'm surprised I haven't seen more of him.

Idk about Kevin... but it is usually known that big man develop in their 3rd year or beyond

the thing you did not notice... he had a PER offense rating of 15 which is as good as an average veteran NBA Player's in limited minutes... He was better than half of our role players in that department

he was not spectacular but he was a solid rookie in his limited minutes

The owner wants us to make the playoffs and the margin is slim and you will see that is a big reason a lot of talent will not be developed fast
Chandler is an exception and a very rare one....

Morey is hiding him til next year so that teams won't even think about getting him with any deal that Morey is planning. TJones has the best potential besides Harden on the team. He will be unleashed once Morey find his missing pieces to surround the Beard.

Definitely right about that. I can't know for sure, since I'm not on the inside, but I would imagine that Chandler listens to the coaches and immediately translates their instructions into how he plays at practice. That's the kind of thing that instills confidence in your coach as to what he can expect from you in a game. And Chandler delivers in a game more often than not.

Some of the others might be slower to take that coaching to heart -- or even worse, think of them as mere suggestions. Maybe someone argues with the coaches a little too much. Who knows how Jones and D-Mo (and now Robinson) handle these things? At this level, though, sheer talent is only one factor in who gets playing time.
