McHale never played soccer the reason those big men don't have post moves is because they dont have the dedication from a young age to drill those moves a trillion times like Hakeem did.
Asik can't even catch the ball and you expect him to dance on the court like Hakeem, even try to attempt that??
yea but he has great footwork and doesnt need to go to hakeem and spend 50k a week thinking he's gonna be just like dream.
lol. That's the first thing I thought. Asik would probably blow out both ACL's and lacerate his liver trying to make some of those moves.
While I love him, I really want Scola to retire as he would be as a great coach if he could teach some of his post game. The thing with working with Hakeem is that I don't think he gives much in way of a home town discount and probably has folk line up from all over the world for him to tutor.
Hip mobility. Soccer gave that to Dream because of how leg intensive the sport is. Same with Nash (he just doesn't have the height and fast twitch muscle fibers). That doesn't mean only soccer players have good hip mobility though. The problem with the last few generations is computer/internet/video game use. We're spending more time sitting down and not being mobile, which leads to stiffer hips. Even if guys are working out for 4 hours, it doesnt' cancel out the other 10 they'll spend sitting while driving, on the computer/tablet/phone/video games. Sometimes that lack of balance is what actually creates injuries.
Asik actually has smooth mechanics. i think he's just used to doing everything two handed/legged and he needs more unilateral work. He's stuck neurologically. Basketball moves and shot blocking, both which he isnt very good at, require a lead hand/foot.
Even though I dislike McHale and hope doesn't coach again next season, he's done a surprisingly good job with our big men, and you can definitely notice it in Asik. Asik's formerly sub-par offensive game has improved dramatically, and I think you have to give the coaching staff credit for it.
First of all, Carroll Dawson was the one who really taught Hakeem the game of basketball, and made him the player he eventually became. Sure Hakeem had natural gifts, but he had some tutelage of his own along the way. Also, Hakeem charges something like 50K a week to train in the Summer. That's probably why the Rockets rookies are lining up to train with him just yet. Training with Hakeem used to be sort of a right of passage.... Now anyone in the NBA willing to shell out big bucks can get an invite.... like Mr. Magee.
I saw improvements in all the players you just named. All of the mentioned players were exclusively dunk shot makers with no other reliable option. Now all of them have a softer hook shot and a post spin move. Not as refined as Hakeem no doubt, but an option when there was none before. Refinement comes from self motivated effort. I think all of the Rockets, not just the big men would have a lot to gain from learning from Hakeem. The beauty in Hakeem's game was in its simplicity. He's automatic with the simple hook. To stop it, you would have to over play it. Then comes, the options...and if you're David Robinson, you saw all of them in one play. I wish Harden would utilize a midrange option and become automatic from that. By relying heavily on the euro step, you are relying on the refs as well.
Send D-mo to Hakeem and T-rob to McHale. Then swap them around and then bam we have the best PFs foreverrrrrr
Well ... http://basketball.realgm.com/wiretap/226479/Howard-To-Train-With-Olajuwon-Again-In-Offseason ...
Maybe DMo can learn some tricks down low....other than that, pointless. No one these days possess Haleem's combination of athleticism, fluidity and foot works. The more they work with Hakeem the sooner they realise they would never get to any where near Hakeem's level, it destroys their confidence. So no, just practice hard and become as good as YOU can be. Hakeem is something else,
I am not sure if Hakeem charge anything for hi lessons, on the other hand D-Mo is one of a few in the NBA that can benefit from the Dream, look at Koby post moves , he had a great foot work and got better with Hakeem so can D-Mo, other. Guys like D.Haward move like a brick can't do that type of game
