I think DMos offensive potential is in line with Brook Lopez but he has a 3pt shot and is a better passer than Lopez. I would think DMo will be as good of a rebounder as Brook.

What I like about DMo (something PPat rarely did) is that even if he is not getting rebounds, he seeks out an opposing player to box out. While it might not help his individual rebound numbers it absolutely helps the teams rebound numbers as a whole. And it cuts down on 2nd chance opportunities for the opposing team.

Pat played ok defense if not overrated but he assisted the opposing team in getting second chance points by not boxing out or getting rebounds. Boxing out is such an undervalued part of the game.

I absolutely see DMo as a 20 PPG scorer because he runs the floor, has great post moves, a good three point shot and he gives a consistent effort. PPat used to dissapear for multiple games at a time. I don't think we will see DMo dissapear for long stretches of games.

This actually is an intriguing question. Why is McHale even playing Robinson? That move is baffling because normally McHale does not ever play people who do not contribute to the win. My only thought is that Morey must be dictating that T-Rob gets minutes for some unknown reason.

JCF and Craig Ackerman stated that the problem with TJones is that he is currently battling injuries from DLeague play. TRob does look completely lost though. He is in serious need of an off season. I'm thinking his ceiling might be along the lines of Taj Gibson because he looks like he might be a good defender and rebounder but I see zero offense from him at this point.

This is becoming pathetic. I know it's cool to do the hipster thing and go against the grain, but to judge a rookie two-thirds of the way through a season and two games into his new team is downright foolish. I question the basketball IQ of anyone who was against this trade.

It's funny how some of you pansies couldn't accept facts. This trade might benefit rockets long termly, but short term wise it would most definite hurt. It's been widely discussed and ackwonledged that Ppat is the better player right now.

So stop blaming someone who brings perspective and facts, toughen up and move on with your life. We will see the true value of this trade in a few years.

It's Robinson's 2nd game as a rocket in his rookie season. Did anybody really think of him coming in and completely beasting? Imo, he's the teams project. Morris also when given minutes his rookie season was pretty bad, but look at what he turned to this year. Some people are just way too quick to judge.

Excellent information. Yes, I do remember TJones having a leg injury or something.

To me this is the more correct stance. But I fear we might see 'Shane Battier trade' style arguments going on for the next 4 years.

    Herrera :: Thomas Robinson
    Kwame :: Shane Battier

Judgment can't be passed on Robinson at this point, positive or negative. It probably can't be until the beginning of next season if I'm honest.

Robinson spent several years playing in college and has played almost an entire season in the NBA -- if someone thinks they can form a judgement of him based on that body of work, I think that is completely reasonable. And I say that as someone who liked the trade and is not ready to call Robinson a bust yet -- but I personally hate posters who try to shut down discussion and declare people who disagree with them as foolish or lesser than. I agree we should give Robinson more time, but if someone tells me they think he is never going to be any good I'll respect that opinion and engage in a discussion of the reasons why they may be right or wrong.

Plus, Robinson has looked as lost as Jordan Hill out there so far, so I am sure you can at least understand some of the negative posts he has been generating so far.

You are confusing "not being able to judge with a high degree of certainty" to with "not being able to judge at all."

Having a not very large amount of data doesn't mean you just don't know anything, it simply means there is some probability that the ultimate outcome will deviate from your projected results to a certain extent (a larger "confidence interval" statistically speaking).

People can and do make judgments based on sample sizes similar to what is available on Robinson all the time. In fact, what data do you think Morey used to make his decision to trade for Robinson? Morey also "judged" that Marcus Morris is worth no more than a 2nd round pick after 71 games with the team. He judged that Motiejunas was ready for NBA minutes based on practice and D-League games (and I concur, despite his flaws, except I think you need to keep a reliable PF on the roster for those "rookie mistake" moments). The Rockets made the judgment to offer Jeremy Lin $25M based on half-season stretch of games. Teams draft players based on sometimes 1 year of college ball.

People are always judging and deciding in basketball and the rest of our lives.

To be clear, I do not know for certain that Thomas Robinson will never make it in the NBA. What I do recognize is that the evidence of his early performance tends to support lower expectation and a higher probability for failure (or at least failure to become anything more than a solid role player).

What I also recognize, are the following:

    (1) Leaving aside future potential, Thomas Robinson's performance suggests that he is unlikely to become that helpful to the Rockets within the span of the next 30 games-- if he "snaps out of it," it'll likely happen in the summer when there is more time for individual players to work on fundamentals.

    (2) Donatas Motiejunas, even though talented and a player I want to see on the floor, is a rookie and subject to the usual rookie liabilities (most important of all is a tendency for mental mistakes leading to defensive breakdowns). Having him out there without a reliable PF as an alternative hurts your chances of winning games.

    (3) That even if the team isn't going to win a title this year, winning games and making the playoffs this season still matters a great deal for the team's future. A late season collapse like last year would tend lead to HOU being viewed as a less attractive destination for free agents-- an important factor when you have $17M in cap space. It would also most likely put the Lakers into the playoffs, giving them a significantly better shot at retaining Dwight Howard (especially if the team bonds during the playoffs and performs well) than they would have had had that team, assembled with such promise, fails to reach post season.

Like I said at the time of the trade, we'll be lucky if it breaks even in this and the next season.

for long term it may be better. But Patterson and Morris were still young, and it isn't like they weren't going to keep improving. When it comes to rebounding and defense, Patterson in particular obviously put in work and improved from the beginning of the season to where he is now. That's a valuable asset for a player to have. He understood what the team wanted and put in work to give that to the team.

I will say that it's too early to say Robinson is a bust. It's far too early. The big men on a team have to do a lot rotating, and moving to the right spot when perimeter players from the other team get past their man. It's unfair to expect Robinson to have that down solid after such a short time with the team. It will take time. In the end the trade may be a good one.

But it's not unfair to to talk about where the team is today, and how the trade affected the team. So far it hasn't been good for the Rockets. I'm not as sold on DMO as a lot of people, so getting him more playing time was never that big of a concern for me. Obviously I want him to do well, and hope he develops. But I think the difference between his and Patterson's defense is bigger in a bad way for the team, than the difference between Patterson's and DMO's offense is in a good way for the team.

    Exactly.

As good as Motiejunas has looked on offense, lets not forget that Patterson was having a very efficient season offensively and especially in the stretch of games before the deadline-- his late performance is significant because he was coming back from ankle surgery in the offseason and had to sit out for an ankle issue for a while:

    Overall, Pat had averaged 11.6 points per 26 minutes, had an 18.6% usage rate, a 52.7% FG%, 57.1% TS%, and 8.1% TO% and a 114 ORtg.

    For the final 11 games of Pat's year as a Rocket, he averaged 14.5 points in 24.5 minutes, had a 60% FG%, 64.5% TS%.

He was very helpful on the offensive end, making not only his newly added 3 point shots, but also a steady diet of layups, dunks, and midrange J.

I don't know if Motiejunas' offense will significantly improve the team's offense over how it was with Pat for at least this season, but I do see a huge difference in missed rotations and pick-and-roll D mistakes when Motiejunas is on the court.

Anyhow, the trade is done now. I hope McHale has the good sense of playing Delfino at the 4 for as much as he can, give Motiejunas a chance but pull him quickly when he screws up repeatedly (like he did when Motiejunas gave Larry Sanders 2 open dunks the other day). And most of all, FOR GOD'S SAKE KEEP THOMAS ROBINSON AWAY FROM THE COURT.

I guess this D is 10/10 by scale of weak/disater  Could it be just because he's giving up all his energy in offense and running like a gasel every position?

I have much more faith in Motiejunas being able to become at least competent defensively than Patterson developing an all-star potential offensive game.

I actually sort of agree with the OP. I don't know how anyone can argue that trading away PPat/Morris for T-Rob doesn't hurt the team in the short term and that it is guarantee good deal for the Rockets long term.

Judging from the time I've seen him at the Kings and the short minutes he's got here, he is VERY raw especially at the offensive side of the ball. He's probably frustrated that the Rockets are in the midst of a playoff race and that T-Rob will probably not even contribute half as much as Morris/PPat could've this season.

From what I've seen I don't think T-Rob will ever equal Patterson as an offensive player however I think T-Rob could become a much better rebounder and defender.

Dmo is over playing, he is trying a bit too hard, needs to calm down - that being said, the team won.

So, no issues, a win is a win.

I don't think anyone can ever guarantee a good deal in the long term. When talking about a player so young with such little playing time as Robinson, there are no guarantees. There can certainly be high hopes, and potential, but nobody knows for sure how it will develop.

With Morris and Patterson we saw the trajectory they were headed on. So we can get a good idea of where they would have gone long term. With Robinson we haven't seen the trajectory for his improvement. He could be great, or could be a total bust. There are no guarantees. I think the trade is based on potential and not a guarantee.

I don't get it. Patterson sucked on defense, too.
