Manaea is my front runner for the number 1 pick for no reason in particular other than the fact I want an experienced college arm with the 1-1. I went back and took a look at some of the final college seasons the past few 1-1's had for comparison, and was just amazed looking back at Strasburg. He literally pitched out of his mind... 59 hits? Anyway, here are the blurbs for Strasburg, Price, and Hochever: I will be interested to see how this year's crop does in comparison considering where they pitch. Arkansas obviously plays tougher competition than ISU when the conference play starts up, but it will still be interesting to watch.
Ryne Stanek and Arkansas beat Evansville 10-4, but he's probably off the pace for the time being. 3 IP, 4 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 4 K Mark Appel will take the mound for Stanford as they open up a series against Fresno State at 7:30. The Bulldogs are led by their mammoth RF, Aaron Judge. Standing 6'7", 255 (no joke), Judge took Appel deep twice the last time they met. Judge is also expected to be a 1st-supplemental 1st-rounder in June. He has hit for a high average in his career, but his power numbers leave a lot to be desired.
The Judge... Goodness. Homerun derby champion last year. Have people been talking about where this kid is expected to go in the draft?
Ryne Stanek, who has fallen behind Manaea and Appel among the college pitchers in consideration for #1 overall, will be on the mound for Arkansas this afternoon/early evening, as the Razorbacks are in Surprise, Arizona for the Coca-Cola Classic. They will be taking on Arizona State at 5. In addition to the Sun Devils, Gonzaga and Pacific will also be in their pool.
Stanek went 5 1/3 ip 5h 2r 3k 2bb tonight at #24 Arizona state. Wasn't particulary sharp, but hit 98 mph in 5th.
Possible #1 pick pitchers in action: Sean Manaea will take the mound for Indiana State against Eastern Kentucky at 1 PM. Mark Appel and Stanford welcome UT to Palo Alto. First pitch 7:30. The obligatory Carlos Rodon watch post: NC State will play the University of Maryland-Baltimore County in the opener of the Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at 12:30. The tourney is being hosted by Coastal Carolina University. Also.... enjoy this Clint Frazier home run. <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/MhJFzbIMS6s?version=3&hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/MhJFzbIMS6s?version=3&hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>
just saw highlights....looked filthy. 2 monster games in a row. him or manaea plus rodon sounds tasty down the road.
Kris Bryant of San Diego went 3-4 with a double and a 2-run homer (his 2nd of the season) as the Toreros defeated Gardner-Webb 5-0.
Appel is really solidifying his 1-1 spot. What is everyone's thoughts on leverage. My thought is if the Astros offer him 1-3 money, he pretty much has to take it. If he doesn't, goes and plays Indy ball, he'd still have to re-enter the draft, and the Astros are a virtual lock to have the 1st pick, and would have 2nd as compensation for him not signing, thus leaving him with 1-3 money as his best option the following year.
