After Morey's "coach of the year" tweet, Rockets began a 7 game losing stretch. After Rockets' glorious win against OKC the coach again tried to tie up his PG with his "29pt 9TO" criticism, and the Rockets seem to start another losing stretch. It's easy to understand for a casual fan that only when each player plays his role as Murphy said a while ago, PG doing the ball handling and SG playing off the ball etc, they can be more focused which is the key to higher intensity and less TOs.
It is all kind of strange. We pursued Pau Gasol and Nene and were gonna re-sign Chuck Hayes. That would have given us a big lineup. But McHale has always seemed to lean toward this small-ball thing. He was gonna take Luther Head and our draft pick (#8) if it had yielded---drum roll, grab the Jergens lotion---Randy Foye. And we would have ended up with Brandon Roy at the #6. Didn't pan out. The point is, Luther Head and Randy Foye? Which side of the rainbow did he think he'd be playing his team? What would he say during timeouts? (squeaky voice) "Follow the yellow brick road." I can't imagine McHale returning as coach. Of course, I can't imagine why he was hired in the first place, except we wanted to spend less on a coach and thought it'd be a transition period anyway. McHale is excellent in an Olajuwon role. Pay him to teach bigs how to play. But as a gametime coach? No. He just doesn't have a feel for it.
Kelvin Sampson is a better coach than mchale, mchale is one of those coaches were they don't say anything to the star players and b****es out at the other players. Example he is ok with a player hogging the ball trying to do too much in traffic, doesn't move his feet on defense and doesn't hustle on defense. But it's ok since he is the superstar, he is a young needs to be taught we need a coach like spurs pops yells at everybody star to role players Mchale chooses the wrong players to play at the wrong situations SMH I'm not trying to hate, I want the the rockets to do good and make playoffs, I'm just frustrated
Mchales has a drive and kick system. Essentially four pg's that can handle the ball, drive, kick, pass, shoot threes. Yes, delfino, parsons, harden, lin can all do this and Asik can get 20 boards. No team can guard your 4 ball handlers.
It's fine as a plan B or in a less competitive league. But I don't think this is a good plan to use against extremely talented NBA teams since it tends to result in the lack of focus and intensity (trying to do too much) for a player and high TOs (playing out of strength) for the team. And I think it's a key reason for our last 7 game losing stretch and the current losing stretch.
Actually the read and react offensive style can be competitive at any level. Almost every NBA team runs it to some degree. But how did it come into existence as the Rockets offensive system? It all began one dark and stormy night when the Diablo himself, Morey, acquired some dark knight by the name of Harden. And what was the good coach, Kevin McHale, supposed to do at that point? Diablo had ripped asunder all of the off season offensive preparations in one fatal fell swoop! Complicating matters further, the entire coaching staff were actually emissaries of the devil himself. So McHale, after burning his entire offensive playbook in the center of a carefully constructed pentagram proclaimed "There is no time to install an offense system, so therefore we shall have none at all"! At first the road to offensive cohesion was littered with the corpses of discontinuity, confusion, and havoc. But, little by little, the roster lead by Dark Knight Harden started to awaken. It began to go into offensive frenzies, ripping opponents into bloodied shreds during frenzies of offensive blood lust. The massacres of Utah and Golden State became the basis of legends. And then one day the shining knight Donatas appeared. And McHale, full of pomposity announced "As this sun has risen, so shall the rule of order and the law of the low post yet again grace my roster". And thus another change, not so drastic as the one at the beginning of this tale, was delivered by the scheming and devious Diablo. Further installments upcoming when information is available.
Mchale needs to widen the rotation and I'm not talking about Trob!!! These guys look dead out there. You could tell they were not running on fast breaks in the 4th due to fatigue. Play James Anderson, T Jones & Smith.
Also I don't understand how he immediately throws trob out there when he clearly isn't ready & he's a rookie...yet he refuses to give Jones a shot.
Yes, Clutchfans complain about McHale for not playing rookies, until he does play the rookies, and then clutchfans b**** about McHale for playing rookies. Clutchfans just like to b****.
THANK YOU. I was complaining about Jones not getting a real shot in the beginning of the year and everybody told me that Mcfukboy is old school and Jones hadnt paid his dues. I thought it was the stupidest thing I ever heard but I tried to listen and give everyone the benefit of the doubt and then T-rob came and plays right off the bat without Jones even getting a chance. I cant wait for a real coach. I miss Rudy and JVG. At this point I would take Billy gullespie or however the hell you spell his last name.
Well bad boy, isn't the offense the one so soundly supported by Morey? Let me see if I remember correctly: 1: Free throws 2: At the rim shots 3: Corner 3 point attempts To be avoided: 1: Two point jump shots 2: Long 2 point shots That is the plan. McHale is just implementing Morey's philosophies. The Rockets attempt by far the fewest 2 point jump shots in the league. As per Morey's orders.
