Bobby I am taking a wait and see attitude. The Kings acquired TD and release Brooks. Not a good sign IMHO.
Playing for the Kings can suck the life out of you, let's wait to see if he has a pulse be for we call him DOA. .......... .......... ..........
A couple things critical that Brooks does that Beverly cannot: 1. Make a 3-point shot. And I don't mean just "make" one in the 2nd quarter, or when the Rockets are ahead by 10, like the vast majority of this roster (or ex-roster since we all know this is Marcus Morris' M.O.). I mean "make a 3 point shot consistently" so you're a threat night-in, night-out and the team knows what they're getting. 2. Spread the floor. That's why #1 is important. If you can make a 3-point shot consistently, teams have to guard you. Especially in the 4th quarter. 3. Be a scoring threat. NBA Championship contenders always have at least 2, plus another guy who can come into the game to occasionally go for 20+ and be the best offensive player on the floor on any given night. Brooks was the dude that could get hot and be the best offensive player on any given night back when the Rockets made the playoffs in 2009. He's not a starting PG, but definitely has a Jason Terry type of explosive game. Right now, the Rockets have 1 consistent 20+ scoring threat - James Harden. 1 guy who if he gets his head on straight, should be a 20+ scoring threat (Jeremy Lin), and 1 guy who should be scoring around 12-15 PPG but isn't a consistent enough shooter so can hurt his team (Parsons). Brooks gives this team another shooter/scorer on a team that actually sorely lacks it (it has lots of volume shooters, but no "we need a 3 to tie this game he's consistently good" type of shooter.
This is the type of game changing scoring I'm talking about. Harden can score and create his own shot when the team needs a bucket in the 4th, and the game is tied (I can't emphasize enough how this team is full of players who's shot disappears when the game is close in the 4th). When Jeremy Lin is feeling confident, he can do this too, and we usually find out whether he's confident in the first quarter or not - his shot is either falling or it's not. Lin should be doing this consistently next season, he has the talent and offensive tools to, but right now he's playing like an All-star only 1 out of every 4 to 5 games (basically less than 25% of the time), while the other times sometimes looking like a scared rookie that doesn't want to shoot or finish. The only other player on this team that can kind of, sort of put points on the board when defenses tighten up and the pressure is on is Delfino. We've seen him nail major 3s and jumpers to stall a 4th quarter collapse. So, 1 player that can consistently score, and 2 players that can sorta maybe do it but look awful when they can't, isn't good enough for a playoff team. Brooks can score, and has done it on an NBA playoff team. Dude is a legit scoring threat both in the regular season and playoffs, when in the right system, or paired with someone like Yao that'll just attract defenses away from him. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IEpJFpp6eKc
Why is it either or? It's the 14th roster spot (White is dead weight). Cut Honeycutt and sign Brooks as insurance. I remember when the Rockets had many PGs on the roster competing for minutes. Inner competition is not a bad thing to have.
NOOOO, cut White as he will never amount to anything useful for this franchise. At least Honeycutt has an abundance of talent, length, and athleticism to build on even if it takes a couple seasons for him to improve to NBA-level contributions. Royce White has only talent, neglibile length advantage attached to a far less athletic and older body with less room for growth and improvement. And White is a nutjob to boot. White should be the first and only cut made during the remainder of this season. Honeycutt has potential for the future.
Rockets to sign after he clears waivers... http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--r...brooks-after-he-clears-waivers-235518057.html
I imagine some of you feel stupid after Beverly closed out the game tonight with his tenacity, hustle, defense, and shooting (BTW...he has a better 3PT% than Brooks)
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=tm3fs1_Q4Nc Looks like he hasn't lost a step. I think this move is going to payoff bigtime down the stretch and hopefully in the playoffs
