So freaking cool. He's the only person I've ever seen that could do the anthem with sunglasses on and not look like a douche.

The first time I saw this, I must've played it 10 times. So awesome. I'm surprised women weren't shooting their star-spangled panties onto the floor by the end of that one.

My contributions to this thread would have to be "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" - one of his duets with Tammi Terrell (both of them died way too soon). His voice on here has a bit of David Ruffin quality to it.

... and of course, come on guys - "the sex anthem" is probably what he's known for :

Last week I was waiting for this douche to make my sandwich at a mom & pop shop in the exclusive suburbs of Chicago where it is virtually 1950. While my sandwich was being made, douche #2 was ringing up this fat afroed white guy about 50 in polyester and a green vest. Douche #2 busted out a harmonica and played. Mr. Fro said "Hey keep at it kid". Douche #2 who is about 22 said he was a professional and..."You probably have never heard of him, but my inspiration is a Stevie Wonder." Fro looked at me, chuckled, looked at Douche #2 and said "Don't know who Stevie Wonder is? Get the **** out of here kid."

Anyway... Reminded me of the assholes in this thread who have never heard of Marvin Gaye....

I've read it at least twice cover to cover and sometimes just flip it open and read a few pages when I'm chillin in the garage.
Im probably biased since I'm a Motown junkie and enjoy all the bios but this one is an excellent read. The book title is perfect. He was indeed a divided, troubled soul.

Yes, on about five or six thousand commercials and sound clips since the late '60s.

    What's Going On
    Trouble Man
    Let's Get It On
    I Want You
    Here, My Dear
    In Our Lifetime
    Midnight Love

Along with an Anthology of early hits, there's your 7 essentials right there. No equal for the man- I think you could call What's Going On the greatest recording of the 20th century and have a legitimate case.

One of my all-time favorites and probably the greatest singer to ever live, imo. Marvin actually started out as a session drummer for Motown before becoming a singer so the guy knew how to play several different instruments (but he wasn't on Stevie Wonder's level).

Along with Stevie's '70s albums, Marvin's albums during that same time period were just as good as dando named off all the albums you should own. Also look at getting "Vulnerable" which was a change of pace album he did that was posthumously released. MPG is his best pre-What's Going On album including his great version of "Abraham, Martin, and John".

Oh and this song is so *****ing badass especially with all the screaming:

Right??? What's next never heard of the temptations or anyone else from Motown record??? I really find it hard to believe scolaisballin has just recently heard of Marvin Gaye??? There is no way that could have been unless he's been living under a rock or lives in Iowa.

    Because it's timeless that's why?

Sure. I'll do that and maybe others will help out, too. Mind you, I can do it under one condition: you trust that I am doing a good job, and you at least have all your drafts done BEFORE you post and are willing to post your text out in the open. We the proofreaders should not change ideas and opinions, only proofreading for grammatical or spelling errors. Understood?

Should I start a thread?

    Sorry about the derail, y'all.

At the laundromat where we used to go, there would also be all the ladies of Motown playing... the trios, the duets, the classics... etc., Supremes, Pointer Sisters, solos after that, Ms. Warwick, even younger generations like Whitney, Toni, etc.
