I am looking at getting my first PS3. (not going to wait around for a PS4).

So, it appears my choices are the PS3 Slim or the latest release the PS3 SuperSlim.

Not sure which way to go. I see that the SuperSlim has more storage and is lighter, but also is disc top loading. Not sure how I feel about that. Would I have to worry about dust getting in there? Or the top breaking?

I know there are some serious gamers on the forums and I could really use some direction on which way to go. Anyone have any thoughts on the PS3 Slim vs SuperSlim?

    thanks!!

I haven't really followed it too closely, but I think the regular Slim is a little nicer, all else equal. Of course, all else is not equal. If you don't mind a little less storage and maybe a bit more noise/power consumption, I'd probably go with the regular Slim. You could also replace the HDD in the regular Slim if that was a problem.

Are the regular Slims cheaper too (yeah, less storage, but not a big deal depending on your preferences)?

If you can make do with the cheaper feel of a top-loading ps3, you're better off with the super slim. It's supposed to be incredibly quiet. Or whatever's cheaper, the newegg@ebay 230$ deal looks pretty good if you need the hdd space.

Regarding the reliability of a top-loader, my ps2 slim is still running fine with little maintenance.

That deal does look pretty good. I'd probably go with a Super Slim if prices are like that.

Anyone else want to chime in?

Also, what's the deal with NewEgg doing an Ebay for $230, when the same product on their site is $299?

I have a slim and I love it but if you don't care if your PS3 feels a little cheap then I would just get the super slim. Also, if you're a serial downloader then the more storage the better.

I have both the slim and the superslim and enjoy both. I believe i would honestly say it a prefrence from you. If you dont mind the toploader i would go with that. there really is no difference. Dust is a issue with every console, but with the toploader atleast you are able to actually clean the area the game is played in, both are hardrive upgradable, both are able to play the same games, and perform the same tasks.

I would go Super Slim. Top loaders are going to be better from a reliability standpoint. Plus, if you ever get the yellow light of death, your game won't be irretrievably stuck in the drive.

You can get the game out of a slim with YLOD. It was the original fat systems that if it got YLOD your game was stuck.

Oh good. Thankfully I've had no occasion to test that feature.

BTW, just had to say the same thing ended up happening to me with Wii/Wii U. My brother bought me the Wii this Christmas. I had been considering getting one since with the new system out they were cheaper. Not a bad time to get these consoles, then there's a whole backlog of great games you can play.

Too bad the 2011 Wii dropped backwards compatibility. I have a bunch of Gamecube games (and 3 controllers) so I got screwed there. At least that's not an issue for Slim vs. Super Slim PS3.

Anyway, you'll enjoy it whichever one you get. I've got a PS3, 360, PS2, Gamecube, Wii, and PSP, but the PS3 gets at least 80% of my time.

    Really helpful information guys. Thanks!

Another question. Hard drive size. How big a deal is this?

I come from a PS2. So, with that, I just had those attached flash drives to store game settings data.

So, with the PS3, it is a whole new world. When games on disc, how much Hard Drive space do I really need?

Just buy it from Craigslist. I wouldn't recommend buying retail this close to the ps4 release.

You can probably find one for 150-200 and most times it'll come with some games. I bought a slim last year from Craig's list for 200 and it came with three games. It was practically new too.

I have roughly 20 games and bought a 300 GB drive. I don't think I've even halfway filled it. I don't do much dlc or PS store purchases though

It's more if you want your ps3 to be a pseudo- htpc. Everything's streaming now, and I think ps3 firmware is up to date with those trends. But I've taken all the hd content off my dvr, converted it to a readable format, and then stored it on my ps3. Probably redundant if you have one of those media streamers from roku or western digital.

And though you said you buy games on disc, as most of us do, digitally distributed games take up a lot of space, and need extra space to initially install. Uncharted 3 just released digitally, and needs over 80 gb of space to download and then install the game.
