Don't listen to any of these stoners, they are pulling out songs from before plate tectonics occurred that are extremely boring and obscure in an effort to sound deep. Think trucker soul. The perfect song to go with is pocahontus - colors of the wind. It's a hit with the ladies, easy to decipher and has all kinds of life lessons.

Basically, it's the story of understanding, acceptance and getting out of your comfort zone to grow as a person. Its very similar to my middle school romance of a tall Nordic blonde who invaded the pants of a brown Hawaiian girl. She taught me all about the importance of nature.

Disney is the gold standard for deep songs. And the teacher of a class silly enough to write essays about songs is going to love it, they all eat up senor Walt.

Funny how you call us stoners and pulling songs from long ago when you bring up Disney songs that are older than some that have been listed. Well that and you can't spell "pocahontus."

But I will say you're right. Disney is great for deep songs. You'd never believe how deep "The Circle of Life" on The Lion King is.

"They'll Need a Crane" By They Might Be Giants. It sounds silly on first listen, but then once you realize it's actually about a divorce, it takes on new meaning. Good stuff.

Agree with the earlier post of Tool's Lateralus. Would probably be one of the more interesting songs to write a paper about.

I'd probably write about what is my favorite song of all time, Radiohead's Street Spirit. Mainly because I never get tired of reading Thom Yorke's thoughts on the song:

“'Street Spirit' is our purest song, but I didn't write it.... It wrote itself. We were just its messengers... Its biological catylysts. It's core is a complete mystery to me... and (pause) you know, I wouldn't ever try to write something that hopeless... All of our saddest songs have somewhere in them at least a glimmer of resolve... 'Street Spirit' has no resolve... It is the dark tunnel without the light at the end. It represents all tragic emotion that is so hurtful that the sound of that melody is its only definition. We all have a way of dealing with that song... It's called detachment... Especially me.. I detach my emotional radar from that song, or I couldn't play it... I'd crack. I'd break down on stage.. that's why its lyrics are just a bunch of mini-stories or visual images as opposed to a cohesive explanation of its meaning... I used images set to the music that I thought would convey the emotional entirety of the lyric and music working together... That's what's meant by 'all these things are one to swallow whole'.. I meant the emotional entirety, because I didn't have it in me to articulate the emotion... (pause) I'd crack.... Our fans are braver than I to let that song penetrate them, or maybe they don't realize what they're listening to.. They don't realize that 'Street Spirit' is about staring the ****ing devil right in the eyes... and knowing, no matter what the hell you do, he'll get the last laugh...and it's real...and true. The devil really will get the last laugh in all cases without exception, and if I let myself think about that too long, I'd crack. I can't believe we have fans that can deal emotionally with that song... That's why I'm convinced that they don't know what it's about. It's why we play it towards the end of our sets. It drains me, and it shakes me, and hurts like hell everytime I play it, looking out at thousands of people cheering and smiling, oblivious to the tragedy of it's meaning, like when you're going to have your dog put down and it's wagging it's tail on the way there. That's what they all look like, and it breaks my heart.
I wish that song hadn't picked us as its catalysts, and so I don't claim it. It asks too much. (very long pause). I didn't write that song."

I've got a ton of them, unfortunately, I don't have a ton of time nowdays so here are a few off the top of my head with brief explanations:

Tupac--Shed So Many Tears

-'Pac is dismayed over giving his life over to the darkside and asks God for forgiveness. That he "lost so many peers" and had "so many homies in cemetary" is a reference to how many people he knew that also gave their lives to the darkside.

Jay-Z--D'Evils

-In this song, Jay-Z discusses coming up in the drug game as an alternate meaning from his true intention of telling the world he sold out to the dark side ("da evils" i.e. devils), which is why he sampled Snoop Dogg's "Murda Was the Case" in which Snoop Dogg raps of how his life improved after selling out. It's also an explantion of how he is down for whatever cause the so-called Illuminati want him to do, which is the reason he sampled Prodigy's verse from the "I Shot Ya" Remix.

Ne-Yo--Closer

A subtle ode to Lucifer if you listen close enough (I don't have enough time to explain in detail right now but some phrases should really stick out).

Maraiah Carey--My All

Combined with the music video and it's symbolism, Maraiah, in a black nightgown, reminesces of her encounter with Lucifer (when she was in a white, "pure," towel) and longs to be with him again.

Eminem--My Darling

Eminem battles his sleeping pill addiction in one explanation while blatanatly and more obviously fighting his demons which he sold his soul to.

Beyonce--Crazy in Love

Beyonce is falling madly in love with a man in one explanation while alternatively is giving her life over to the darkside. Jay-Z literally lights the spark that damns the real Beyonce in a "car" as Sasha Fierce is born (and SHE said herself Sasha Fierce was born in this music video).

Lupe Fiasco--Kick Push

On a more tame subject, Lupe encourages people to keep grinding in life when people don't accept them while using the theme of skateboarding.

Lupe Fiasco--The Cool (album)

Lupe uses three characters to explain how the one has to play The Game through The Streets to achieve The Cool. Easily the deepest track on the C.D. is "Streets on Fire," a song about the ills of AIDS at first glance but in reality mental disease that inflicts all of society.

Like I said, I really don't have time to explain all of that in deeper detail and I have even more examples, just limited time these days.
