Who cares? Maybe they don't want to assume you're Chinese? Be proud that you know you heritage. A lot of white people are just known as white people and the blacks as well. Would you feel better if they called you by color?

Happens with my wife all the time. She's half black and half Chinese, so people are curious about her look. But asking about ethnicity is a little taboo in this country. It's a pretty forward question about a subject there's a lot of sensitivity about. So, people use some sanitized language to try to ask the question without stirring up trouble or causing offense. The appropriate thing to do is to simply answer the question they're really asking and forgive the clumsy way in which they phrase it.

So what? They're asking about your heritage, you can say "oh i'm Chinese but I'm born and raised in the US" how hard is that?

If anybody had a conversation with me they would assume I'm American because I'm fluent in English even though I'm from Asia, but does it bother me when they ask me which state I'm from? No.

I'm assuming when they ask "What is your NATIONALITY?" they are not asking what state I'm from.

thank you... and its not like my gripe is some deep seated hatred for those people that ask me the question... its just an annoyance. I'm perfectly fine if people ask me what my ethnicity is.

No one crucified you. You stated an opinion. You asked a question. Not many agreed with your opinion. No one called you racist. No one said you were a bad person.
