Do you really believe this? You think coach Mchale has it out for Lin? That he would rather lose; essentially sacrifice his coaching career to prove he was right about cutting one player(even if circumstances at the time gave him little choice)?

This isn't about Mchale's ego it's about yours.

McHale never called Jeremy Lin selfish or questioned his character. Obviously people here are struggling to put that quote in the context of all the other comments McHale has made about Lin as a person and as a player during this season, not to mention the manner in which he says things when addressing the media (half-joking most of the time).

Well what value are you adding except dissing on LOFs? Do you want to count the number of posts you made in this thread compared to me?

I didn't say he'd rather lose - you're twisting my words to make a point. And no I don't think he personally has it out for Lin. IMO it's a pride thing with McHale - he agreed to let Lin go and Lin exploded in NY. You tell me what his problem is then - he obviously has a problem with Jeremy. Why the comment if it wasn't burning him that Jeremy had 29 points? Did he comment that Harden who had 46 points was padding his stats? And don't tell me about turnovers - the only Rocket player with a decent assist/turnover ratio is Lin.

The quote in any context would be bad and your example is proof of it. Let's examine your example...if the team isn't scoring then Lin steps up to pick up the scoring slack...in "reality" whenever Lin scores big, the team wins more games percentagewise than when he scores less. In these winning games, Lin also scores more efficiently and has fewer turnovers per possession. Basically, McHale is taking an unjustified potshot at Lin that isn't true while insulting him as a selfish player who stat packs at the expense of the team in a game the team won largely because of Lin. After the OKC game, everybody agreed Lin played a great game with alot of people saying it was the best backcourt in the NBA and McHale comes out with this nonsense reference to Lin's performance in that game. Laughable if it weren't so sad that this garbage were being argued as tough love by a POP type coach.

I dare you to find McHale's quote where he says that. Not a website where someone says that McHale reportedly said it, but the actual McHale quote saying that.

You won't find it because it doesn't exist. That came from someone just trying to stir up ****.

He has discussed this indirectly in the past.

Morey looks for leadership and the ability to lead a group of people in a head coach, and the details are managed by the assistants. In the case of the Rockets the defense is handled by Sampson and Bickerstaff and the offense is handled by Finch and Bickerstaff.

McHale is good at what he is asked to do. You do not hear of factions on the team or amongst the coaching staff and the players play very hard for McHale and his staff.

The Rockets model is not that unusual. The NFL uses it, as well as a number of NBA teams. The Celtics in the 80's did, as well as the recent Celtics team, the Lakers did under Phil Jackson.

You said "I think Mchale would almost rather lose than let Lin have a good game." What am I missing?

EVEN PJ gets called out for questionable rotation or not calling timeouts or whatever decision he's made. To some here, McHale seems to be in the no-wrong righteous position.

As I said earlier, I don't care about his intention, but I think his negative comment on Lin publicly to the media, is wrong. Be it unfortunate, or mistakenly choosing of words, or a reflection of true thoughts, it's just unprofessional and unnecessary.

He told Lin "we are trying to win here", in other words, Lin's scoring wasn't intended for the team win. It's a huge blow to a humble and team-oriented guy. For those of you advocate such "tough love", please look into the mirror and ask yourself when your boss sends out a broadcast email to the whole firm, telling them that he told you to be more oriented to team success, how much you would appreciate that "tough love".

What McHale said in the interview was wrong, but people can't even see that. This thread is going for 30 pages, half of them are arguing how McHale did the right thing, and yet I haven't seen one single example of those tough loving coaches in Pop or others dissed the character of the players they "loved", IN PUBLIC.

Edit: as for assist: turnover ratios, good! You're not roping me into some argument where I rip a member of my favorite team because so many of his fans are obnoxious. I hope he sets an NBA, nay, galaxy record for assist to turnover ratio. That John €}%€ Stockton sends his reprobate kids to Lin to learn how to take care of the ball.

you bring up a very ironic point, b/c his old teammate larry clearly had this approach when he coached the pacers. he was all about the players and their development and consistently called out his own performance on the bench after losses. and at the opposite spectrum, mchale seems to operate as if he's continually worried about his next paycheck..

Who's being obnoxious - the coach who accused his starting PG of padding his stats over winning or the fans who object to this public criticism.

The criticism is ridiculous and makes no sense anyway as anyone but a LOH would know.

Useless contribution as expected. Now go back into your hole until the next time Lin scores 0 points and 6+ turnovers for you to start your trolling. :)

McHale wasn't accusing Lin of padding his stats -- he was saying he needs to learn to consistantly play in a PG's mindset, not a SG's mindset. Valid criticism.

Lin's role on this team is to run the team. How is it so wrong for his coach to remind him of that?

Completely false. The bolded statement was what Lin said during Linsanity about the Knicks coaches! Why are you making stuff up? I am now questioning where you got your other quotes as well.

But that's not what he said... how did you get that message from the quote, having 29 pts and 9 TOs rather than winning does not translate to "play in a pg's mindset, not a SG's mindset" no matter how hard you try to interpret it.

I already said before that I believe the quote is just failed PR from McHale and that I do not believe he's out to get Lin. But I really hate how a lot of you are trying to spin the quote into something else.

Just accept the reality of it which is he said a bad statement about his player in the media. Whether it was intentional or not is up to the reader's debate. But it is what it is, so ppl who are trying to defend McHale just stop spinning his quote, but rather discuss why it could have been an unintentionaly quote.
