PS...this is why hospitals have ethics committee's available for all staff...the Charge nurse was an idiot for at least not consulting a trained panel...the ethics committee hopefully wouldve directed this situation in a more appropriate way...

I think thats what the nurse wanted to just to do her job and take care of her patient no matter what color this patient was.

I can see where lynus is comming from, as a charge nurse you are trying to accommodate the patients to the best of your ability. I am sure many non white medical worker have experience some form of racial tension from pt, just look at the era that most of the people in the hospital grew up in. I will tell you this medical field is mostly a thanks less profession, you will be surprise how rude some pt can be. The charge nurse in the story will properly get fire due to the hospital trying to save faces, eventhough in my opinion he/she did nothing wrong and he/she properly didn't even think this is a big deal but the nurse has to go and blow this out of proportion.

Would have been epic if the baby turned out to be half black.

I might've missed this earlier but does your hospital have a non-discrimination policy regarding employment and job assignment? Also regarding parental rights once the baby is admitted does the parent have a right to remove the child if the hospital determines that treatment is needed?

I can understand your point that it is better to provide treatment at the risk of complying with the demands of the racist parent but it seems like the nurse may have a case if the hospital's policy's conflict with that. Also my understanding is that there have been cases of charging parents with child abuse / neglect for not providing needed medical treatment so the racist dad may not have any legal ability to enforce his demands.

You remind me of the old cafeteria argument in college
"I notice all the black people sit together. . . why do you segregate yourselves" - white person asks
I look around and see rows and rows and rows of tables that are white only.
"Them all around us . .. are they segregating themselves???" - me

and you are right. . . i have notice a trend among non-black people to see things differently and give non black more 'benefit of the doubt' than black people in most if not all situations

    like I said .. . i balance that.

For Instance . . the onion referred to the 9 yr old Oscar nominee as a C**t
I find it odd that they never did that to Dakota Fanning, Linsey Lohan, Drew Barrymore, etc all the other young award nominees . . . I just cannot help but wonder how they felt so comfortable and at ease disrespecting this young actress . . .yet did not with the others?
What do you think the difference is?

Not excusing The Onion at all. That was a vile and vicious thing to say about Miss Wallis. That being said, the other actresses you mentioned have never been nominated for an Academy Award. Also, for the most part, the Twitter age wasn't around when those actresses were 9.

This is completely incoherent. The Onion, seriously? They wrote a gag issue on 9/11, second thing I read after watching the clips on CNN. And I know you might have gone to college a decade or so before me, but the cafeteria thing's on you, dude.

Is that before or after some prosecutor charges them them for criminal negligence against medical advice?

I commend you for thinking of the baby at the foremost, but allowing the father's behavior in a public hospital triggers revulsion in me.
