"If it's possible to like what a team is doing and have no clue whether it'll ever work, then we present the Houston Rockets to amaze and confuse you.

Daryl Morey, the nerdy general manager with the high IQ and low patience, wins regularly in the off-season and yet the Rockets could miss the playoffs for the fourth straight year. They have roughly $20 million to spend this summer and that might not buy Dwight Howard or the right player. From top to bottom the franchise appears built and equipped to last but can hardly be considered elite by any definition.

James Harden is a top-three scorer, Jeremy Lin has jerseys that sell in distant countries and the Rockets are as must-see as it gets for a team living on the playoff edge. And yet if the Lakers finally figure it out and make a move up the standings, their footprints will be all over the eighth-place Rockets, pushing them down and out of the mix.

That's the Rockets, all dressed up with no place special to go, and a reasonable question to ask is … how's this possible?..."

Oh? The other playoff seeds in the west are cemented? Only the 8 spot is up for grabs?

It's entirely possible the Rockets complete botch their plan to get another superstar next to Harden, and end up as either a fake contender or a perennial 9th seed, but it's unlikely.

Difference between last 3 years and this year is that this team has a lot more potential and is much more likely to succeed.

To use poker terminology: If the previous 3 or so years netted the Rockets the most average of winning hands - say a pair of 7's, this coming summer the Rockets are entering free agency with pocket Aces.

Could they lose out in FA? Yes...it is likely? No.

my favorite line is typical of a reporter: "They can't afford a long losing streak because the Lakers are poised to take advantage"

because its 8th seed or bust for the Rockets.

We are only a few games out of the 7th-5th seeds, all within play

I feel like that trade should have happened in offseason as to not mess with team chemistry during playoff run. To bad Morey is addicted to trading players like Pokemon cards

Whatever. But this is much better than tanking and praying to the ping pong gods for success.

The title was so clever that I thought it had to be an ESPN article. Or Bleacher Report. Same quality.

Too bad it doesn't matter and we're still winning games.

You guys are getting to complacent on this team. It's not that Morey is addicted to trading it's that the rebuilding process is still far from finished.

Yes we finally have our superstar in Harden but we still need the complimentary peices around him to succeed.

This team has gone thru a full makeover over the past few years and it may take another 2 years to finally complete the job. Then we can finally settle on our team being the contender we have the potential to be right now.

Morey is the reason we have the most flexibility and potential of any other team that will be a major player this year in free agency. It's wrong to have your doubts about him and his plans now.

It's also good to remember what the media was saying about Houston early on.

The Warriors will fall, we'll move to the 7 or 6th seed, and Lakers will get in to the playoffs.

Are you ever happy with the Rockets? Seems like all you ever do is whine on here.

Agreed. To describe this clean slate Rockets team as just like the Rockets team of the last three years isn't even annoying as much as just plain silly.

this a troll article written by someone who has too much time on their hands.

What the author fails to realize is that the rockets were supposed to be one of the worst teams in the league at the beginning of the season, there are only two players left from last years team and James Harden makes Houston the most attractive FA destination this summer

Did you read the article? It's not as negative as you might think.
