Best: Schindler's List Worst: The Greatest Show on Earth I know that "worst" one is old, but it was just awful. There are several that I could put as "best," like Annie Hall, The French Connection, and Casablanca, but Schindler's List is my pick.
Best: Casablanca. My favorite film of all time. Timely beyond belief, emotional, compelling. Yeah, it's dated. But it's still fantastic. Worst: Chariots of Fire. The movie basically won because of the theme song. A long, slow, boring movie about running. To call it a pedestrian drama would be generous. I'm sure lots of folks will say "Shakespeare in Love", and while I agree it should not have won that year, I don't think it was a bad film. It's actually a sweet romantic comedy in period costume.
In the last 30 years Best: Amadeus Worst: Crash (far and away), Out of Africa and Ordinary People They was robbed: Raging Bull, Goodfellas and Brokeback Mountain.
1999 was the last truly great year in film. In a year that gave us: All About My Mother Being John Malkovich The Insider The Matrix The Sixth Sense Three Kings Magnolia Toy Story 2 Election Fight Club The Iron Giant Eyes Wide Shut The Straight Story They gave it to American Beauty. Worst best picture ever!
Best 1974 The Godfather: Part II. And that was the same year Chinatown and The Conversation were nominated. So you know it's f-wking bad ass.
Crash winning will forever and always be the ultimate crime, closely followed by Forrest Gump winning over Pulp Fiction. For best....too many to really say.
Worst: Chicago (should've been LOTR: Two Towers or the Pianist) Crash Driving Miss Daisy American Beauty Best: Lawrence of Arabia The Bridge on the River Kwai Casablanca The French Connection LOTR: Return of the King
Not to derail the thread, but I disagree. I think 2007 was every bit as good a year in film as 1999. For example: No Country for Old Men There will be Blood The Assassination of the Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford Juno 3:10 to Yuma (a very underrated western) The Bourne Ultimatum (loved the way they wrapped up the Damon trilogy) Eastern Promises Hot Fuzz Knocked Up Gone Baby Gone American Gangster Superbad Zodiac 300 (was great for what it was) I'm sure there are some I am forgetting. Pixar had their usual fantastic yearly offering with Ratatouille. There were several critcally acclaimed films that I never saw like Once, I'm Not There, Into the Wild and Michael Clayton. 2007 was a banner year for movies.
