Letter to Italian President alleges Pope seeks 'legal immunity' A letter by the Secretary of the International Tribunal into Crimes of Church and State alleges Pope Benedict XVI is asking the Italian government to grant him protection and immunity from legal prosecution. The sudden resignation has led to conspiracy theories, with some saying it is related to the Pope's confidential papers that were stolen by the Pope's butler, Paolo Gabriele. At the time of Gabriele's trial, it was alleged that the papers revealed financial corruption within the Vatican. Others allege the resignation is due to a sex scandal which will soon be revealed. The Vatican continues to say that the resignation is due to the Pope's "advancing age". A statement issued by International Tribunal into Crime of Church and State (ITCCS) may point towards a pending scandal however. On Thursday, the ITCCS issued a statement saying the Pope has requested to with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano on February 23rd. The Vatican Information Service has confirmed that the Pope is scheduled to meet with Napolitano on the 23rd. The ITCCS claims the Pope sought the meeting to ask for immunity from prosecution by the Italian government. full article
Of course he knew. And the Cardinals knew he knew before they elected him. No sympathy for the Church or those involved. A prideful, corrupt organization that stands between people and God. What could go wrong?
Sadly with 16 years of Catholic education and very devout parents I have to agree. Catholics especially should see Mea Maxima Culpa which I just saw on HBO yesterday. Devastating.
“This scandal is putting us, the clergy and the church, where we belong — with the excluded ones; Jesus was painted with the same brush as the two thieves crucified with him.” _____ The Prelate as Scapegoat Cardinal Roger Mahony of Los Angeles wants to participate in the election of the next Pope, and it seems likely that he will get his wish — even though he covered up child abuse when he was archbishop of Los Angeles and was officially relieved of public church duties at the end of January. Judging from the cardinal’s personal blog, if he travels to Rome he will arrive prayerfully accepting his role in the scandal — the role of “scapegoat.” He said on Wednesday that he is sustained lately by spiritual writings that focus on “the acceptance of being scapegoated, pointing out the necessary connection between humiliation and redemption.” It seems possible, however, that he prefers the role of martyr: “This scandal is putting us, the clergy and the church, where we belong — with the excluded ones; Jesus was painted with the same brush as the two thieves crucified with him.” For some, the cardinal represents nothing so theologically subtle. He’s just a plain embarrassment. One cardinal said his presence at the coming conclave would be “disturbing.” But Cardinal Mahony has every right and duty to be there, according to other church officials, including the current archbishop of Los Angeles, Jose Gomez, who had to rebuke his predecessor when records came to light detailing how the cardinal protected rogue priests. Considering the long history of the church’s child abuse problem in America — it eventually involved the dismissal and criminal investigation of more than 700 priests — it may be good, not bad, that Cardinal Mahony go to Rome, whether in prelate’s robes or sack-cloth and ashes. Whatever factors go into the deliberations that produce the next Pope, surely the conclave can use his daily presence as a reminder of the Vatican’s woeful track record in managing the scandal. The need is obvious for the college of cardinals to choose a Pope who can repair what Cardinal Mahony described in his blog post as “this terrible sinfulness which has overwhelmed all of us in the Church.” link
What really pained me was watching the dying man confront the former priest at his home, telling him to march himself down to jail "right now!". The priest turned his back and went into the house. His helper(? housekeeper?) stayed outside to remonstrate, saying in sign language: "You should forgive. Are you Catholic? Are you Catholic?" And him, basically (I'm paraphrasing): "Do you even GET what this is about? What he got away with?"
Its time for somebody to step up. Making an example out of the pope would be great let him die in prison. Covering up child molestation, stealing money, this is what they do. Will they ever get what they deserve? Where are the arrests? In america we arrests people left and right for so many small offenses but yet priests get away with molestation.
If the Pope's involvement can be conclusively proven and his actions constitute a crime, I am all for sending him to prison. I am, however, fearful of a torches and pitchforks mentality where we jail people based on suspicion and anger.
we may never find conclusive evidence but how is it possible to be the head of the catholic church and not know?
How could OJ not have killed his ex wife? How could Roger Clemens not have known he was lying to Congress? We believe in a standard of beyond a reasonable doubt. We believe in not allowing a criminal conviction based on "he had to have known." I am not willing to sell out one of our fundamental beliefs to satiate a need for vengeance.
We believe in beyond a reasonable doubt when it comes to the likes of the rich and famous. When it comes to regular people its guilty until proven innocent. Laws mean nothing what is important is how the laws are enforced. The pope knew about the molestation that is what is truly important.
So we have a previously banned user who cannot spell rambling mindlessly about stuff. Just wondering which previous user this is.
