In Shaking up the Rotation, is Morey Attempting to Force McHale's Hand?

Most of us probably remember how upset Adelman was when we traded Battier two years ago. Obviously part of the motivation there was getting a first rounder, but it also opened the door for Budinger to get more time and established a defined 9-man rotation.

While I don't doubt that the main reason why Morey pulled the trigger on this deal was because he had a great opportunity to nab an undervalued asset in Robinson, by trading both of the PFs in our rotation (particularly Morris) it seems like he's also sending a message that it's time to let DMo and/or Jones get some burn. Right now Coach McHale has the option of giving minutes to an unproved youngster who just got here or unproven youngsters who have been with the organization all season (or he could just go all in with the super small lineup we saw last night, which would actually be a pretty funny "Eff You" to the front office).

Also, while I don't subscribe to the tiresome "McHale hates Lin" theory, I do think that Jeremy should be playing closer to 35-37 mpg, which I suspect is more likely than Beverly getting the 20+ minutes a night that TD was receiving.

Or it could just be that Morey really, really wanted TRob. But either way, seeing more Motiejunas (and maybe a little bit of Jones) will be a nice bonus.

At the risk of losing my LOF street cred, I don't think Jeremy Lin should be playing more than 32 minutes/night. Even last night, coming off a long break, you could see him exhausted at the end of the game. He's much better in high energy mode. Until he commits himself to getting into better shape they need to watch his minutes. I'd rather have the good Jeremy for 30 minutes than a tired, dead legged one for 38.

Yeah, anytime part of your rational for making a trade is to clear minutes for other players, you are influencing the rotation, but I'm sure he had some input from McHale as to how ready DMo and Greg Smith were to play more minutes.

I think he really liked TRob. And it definitely looks like the Morris trade was actually to force McHale to play the young guys. It does not make sense otherwise.

He really likes TRob and it was just time to move PPat and Morris. Worked out perfectly.

You bet it is...he got rid of all of Mchales favorites. Ppat, Morris, Aldrich, Douglas. Trading Morris wasn't even necessary, but he did it anyway to make sure. Dmo, Greg Smith were guaranteed more minutes. Addition by subtraction..

This point just seems so absurd to me that a GM would make a trade transaction to make a point to the coach. Seems petty and a silly theory and I don't believe this is how Morey works. He needed to get rid of Patterson and Morris because they had earned their playing time and the fair thing to do for them without benching them for our young players was to trade them. I don't know why that isn't obvious.

Looking at last nights game and Coach Mac's tendency to not play rookies, I bet we go small with CP at the 4 and Delfino at the 3. In this case Greg Smith would get the bulk of the backup minutes at the 4. I hope he does play the rookies. I would love to see more DMo and TRob but I somehow doubt he all the sudden starts playing them significant minutes.

No. I think Morey is just trying to get better players.

Had to clear up our PF logjam somehow. PPat is a fine role player, but wouldn't be worth keeping once he's off his rookie contract. Morris has been regressing rather than improving; had to sell him while he was still worth something. Dropping them both and just going to your 3 guys with plenty of potential and lots of years on their rookie contracts to burn makes plenty of sense from the GM side.

Last night's game is pretty strong evidence that we don't really need scoring at the PF to win. Our foundational players can pick up the slack while our PF prospects develop.

    Two reasons

    1) They do really like Robinson, they wanted him at the draft, Kings are a disaster so were willing to get rid of him.

    2) They like the way Monty and Greg Smith are coming along and wanted to free up playing time for them. This was going to have to happen eventually, we all knew that when we started the season with a million PFs.

I think Morrey in one of his interviews already said the Morris trade was to free up playing time. So to answer the OP's original question ........YES!
