We're looking to swing a deal for a star to put beside Harden. In the modern NBA, you don't see a lot of star-for-star deals - they tend to be asymmetric. Usually, the team that owns the star has peaked and wants to rebuild, often before their star leaves as a free agent. For a team like that, draft picks are much more desirable than prospects (unless the prospects are really good or have huge hype. Think Derrick Favors) It's also timing - right now, Jones still has the shine of 'potential'. In a few years, he'll be just another middling NBA player.

Basically, we're trying to cash in an asset that has a limited shelf life and is hard to move for something more desirable.

Morey said it himself after he traded Lowry - a draft pick is far more valuable than any player because every team in the league values a draft pick, whereas any non all-star is only valued by a small portion of the league depending on their need at that position, the contract, and the fit within the system.

I do hate to see Jones dealt for anything other than a guaranteed lottery pick though. In almost any other draft he would have been a lotto pick. I think most of us knew at the time he was drafted that he was more of an "asset" than anything -- they saw value on the board and took it.

Yeah but he has very little value to the Rockets though. He's solidly 4th on the depth chart and the Rockets are looking at PF's in FA, he'd never play for the Rockets if he stays. Might as well get something for him. I'm imagining a mid round pick.

Either that or they are foreseeing upgrading the position (the 4) thus adding still another player at a log-jammed position.

Its obvious that we have way to many 4's. And adding another would make our roster even more unbalanced. Turning 4's into 1st round picks makes a lot of sense if it can be done.

There are teams out there over the cap with expiring contracts who they dont intend to resign that if they can unload, will save them money and get them under the cap. Its a win-win for them. They essentially unload a player and his contract, give up a 1st, but get a 1st, as in Terrance Jones.

Someone like Rip Hamilton has been brought up for this type scenario.

I keep seeing Jones listed as fourth on depth chart at PF. Patterson, Morris, Motiejunas, Smith, and Parsons appear to be ahead of him. Granted, I think it is very close from Patterson to Jones, but right now he looks to be sixth in line for PT at PF spot. Poor White, I think he is the first ever guy to be seventh on an NBA depth chart.

Also remember we need to dump salary if we want to be able to offer Howard his max. I thought it would be Patterson. For a roster limit move like this, I thought it would be Smith. I retain my faith in Morey though. He knows what he is doing.

Well the good news for him though is with Jones likely getting shipped, Motiejunas playing with the Rockets main team, and Vernon Macklin leaving the Vipers, he might be first string on the D league team now.

First team D League Team is the greatest dubious honor since Crash Davis was the minor league home run champ.

Does anyone have a clue what range of a first round pick we would want or get. would we be looking to trade with middle of the road teams, with extremely good teams with late picks, or for a early pick. What is Terrence worth?

Ah, I forgot about Greg Smith though, so Royce will still be coming off the bench.

looks like T.Jones being pulled from the D-League Allstar game has some meaning after all. I wouldn't be surprised if they already had a deal on the table that they liked and are just waiting for other potential options to shake out.

We're going to trade Jones for what will end up being the 14th pick (it's our destiny). Then we will draft Alex Poythress 6'8 240 pound SF/PF out of Kentucky. It's a never ending cycle.

I would think Morey would try for a pick guaranteed between 10 and 20 starting in 2014.

We also have to remember that the Rockets acquired the 18th pick (Budinger trade) largely because they wanted to use it as ammo to get Dwight or move up in the draft. I think like us, they never imagined keeping it. So yeah, it makes complete sense to trade him for a #1 now that he wasn't part of any package deal last summer.

Terrance jones being compared to Dennis Rodman. It's official, I've now heard everything.

Not even close to as bad as those morons who keep comparing Royce White and Lebron James.
