I remember reading about stretch provision. This quick search on it found this. Sorry J-Lin happens to be in article.

    http://newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/07...n-avoid-poison-pill-3rd-year-of-lin-contract/

"If the player’s salary payments are spread-out using the Stretch provision, the team may elect to stretch the salary cap charge to match2. For example, if two seasons remain on the player’s contract when he is waived, and the payment is spread-out over five years per the Stretch provision, then the team may elect to spread-out the salary cap hit over those same five years."

nor do I unless we are drooling over some picks they have that I don't know about. I don't want anyone except for Rose, or I'd take Ol' Tom back!

It's funny how this thread started out about us getting an extra asset by absorbing Hamilton's contract. Maybe relieving some of the glut at PF in the process. Somehow this has born discussions about Parsons for Deng and Rose for Harden. C'mon you knuckleheads let's try to stay in the realm of reality.

Actually, the Rockets can ELECT whether to take a $1 million cap hit next year OR to take a $333,333 cap hit in each of the next three seasons. Rip would get PAID $333,333 of his partial guarantee in each of the next three years, regardless. (I'm not exactly sure the deadline by which the Rockets must make this election for cap treatment, although I assume it is at the time he is waived - likely June 30 or so).

On another note, I hope people here don't get their hopes up TOO high about getting Mirotic or the Charlotte first rounder. Honestly, I'm not too optimistic about getting either of those assets from Chicago. If anything, I'd guess that the Rockets end up with a lottery-protected Chicago first rounder or maybe even just multiple future second rounders. While a hypothetical "Rip-for-nothing" trade would maybe save Chicago $6.8 million, it "only" costs the Rockets about $2.65 million, which is still a pretty low price to pay if they're getting Chicago's 2013 pick (expected to be in the #20-#24 range).

My reaction on a "Rip + X for [nominal consideration] trade" will be:

If "X" = Mirotic or the Charlotte first rounder: Ecstatic

    If "X" = Chicago's (lottery-protected) first rounder: Pleased

If "X" = Multiple second rounders: Moderately disappointed

If "X" = One second rounder or nothing: Not pleased. (But, hey, at least it's still an extra second rounder!)

P.S. If it's a trade of Terrence Jones for Rip Hamilton and a first rounder, that would not get Chicago all the way under the tax threshold, meaning the Bulls would either have to (a) include another player to Houston (like Nazr Mohammed) or (b) find another taker for such player (meaning additional exhaustion of assets, like a second rounder). Just keep that in mind.

That's what happens when people just focus on short term moves and instant gratification instead of looking at the bigger picture.

I'm just saying, none of these suggestions wouldn't even work on NBA2K. Where do poeple get this stuff from?

If it is purely to make use of our cap space this year, the Rockets are probably the last team the Bulls want to trade with after we stole Asik from them.

Having said that, they have to take the best offer available :)

Agreed. Mirotic and the Charlotte pick are the best assets on Chicago's books. They are going to give them away just to dump Rip Hamilton's corpse and save a few million. They aren't exactly hurting for money.

That's good and all, but the real question is how you'd feel about such trade! Moderately pleased? Greatly pleased? Thrilled? Happy? Ha. Just kidding. :)

I totally agree that it's rather unlikely for the Rockets to pry away Mirotic or the Bobcats 1st.
FWIW some Bulls fans think Mirotic is Kevin Love meets Jesus Christ and that the Bobcats pick won't be traded for anything but LeBron. I'm exaggerating, obviously, but you get the point.

This could be what they're negotiating right now. Morey wants Mirotic or CHA pick while Gar Forman is just offering CHI's lottery-protected 1st rounder or 2nd. Who has the leverage at this point though? At the end of the day, Morey would be content with their lottery protected 1st but is in no rush to close the deal. Taking his time and hoping Forman would be desperate at the last minute and give in to Morey's demands.

This is where you use the value of cap space. Pay half of someone else's bill for something nice in return.

Does anyone else have 6 mill in cap free? ie. Who is our competition? [Edit] I don't see any other teams with free space. I'm not sure if someone has a TE that large they are willing to use without sending themselves over the limit.

Deng is a coach pick. If the coaches in the NBA thinks that he is an all star, I say he is a all star.

Coaches pick IN THE EASTERN CONFERENCE. Give it a rest. The Rockets should not, and will not trade for Luo Deng tomorrow.

Thanks, HMMMHMM! Saved me the time/effort to look this up. Nice comprehensive list of any possible competition.

    1. Apparently you don't understand this is about acquiring a draft pick or the rights to Mirotic (who is, by all accounts, a very promising young power forward)

    2. Really? You would rather have a guy who is coming off a year of not playing due to injury than James Harden, who is having an MVP caliber season? That's crazy. We have no idea if Rose will return at full strength or ever return to the levels he was previously playing at.

What can we always use? 3pt shooting.

What do we need? Veteran leadership, experience, especially playoff experience.

Rip's contract may be what got the teams talking, but Rip the player is still valuable to us.
