I dont think(just my opinion) the Rockets view him as much of an upgrade from Parsons. I know I sure dont. If the Rockets wanted Deng so bad then I would think that they could have already had him. Very good player, not what I would consider a secondary star thats going to grow with this team, and bring them back to title contention.

Who does he take minutes from? Delfino? Parsons? Douglas?

From what I read from Bima elsewhere, the new CBA has a provision that lets you spread the cap hit from Rip over a couple of years. So, if we waived him, he'd cost $333,333 of the cap each year for the next 3 years. That's pretty inconsequential.

Deng is an All-Star this season making 13 mil. I don't see them giving him away for Parsons and "expirings"

LMAO. People here who think Parsons is anywhere NEAR Deng are delusional. Parsons + expirings for Deng?!? Are you kidding me???

Not sure they would really care. Since Rip is smart enough to know that this move likely means he will not be with the Rockets next year, I think he will understand what his role is, and act like a professional.

I dont know exactly where the minutes would come from, but my guess would be the minutes that James Anderson has been getting lately with some of the injuries going around. He's a vet. Thats the least of my worries.

Thanks for the clarification there. I was looking for the answer to that. Good news. Very much worth acquiring an asset like the Bobcats pick or Mirotic.

Chandler and Deng have identical PER's. Chandler shoots much better (much higher TS%), has more win shares in less minutes, is 3 years younger, and makes 1/15th of the money Deng makes. Try again.

I don't see Daryl Morey giving away our max cap space going into this off-season for Luol Deng. Let alone losing Parsons in the process.

Again, these types of moves are short term fixes that won't make the team contenders.

    Luol Deng ($13.3mil/2yrs) - season avgs. 16.8ppg, 6.8rpg, 3apg, 42%fg

    Chandler Parsons ($888k/3yrs) - season avgs. 14.5ppg, 5.6rpg, 3.8apg, 47%fg

Is this upgrade at the Small Forward position really worth paying $12.5mil more for and given the fact that we would lose our max cap space going into the summer.

I am genuinely curious to know why Deng is not that much of an upgrade.

Are we talking overall package (contract + talent?)

    My take on Deng:
I think Deng is an interesting player because he had a lot of potential at one point (even being discussed in trades of the likes of Kobe or Tmac -- I believe) but never reached that potential. He is a dynamic player though. Also, at 6'9'' for a SF he really allows us to go big and he can match up well against players like Kevin Durant, all while being able to hit shots. He never gets tired and is relentless all 40 minutes of the game which he plays. He also is young enough to be entering his prime while old enough to provide leadership. He also is VERY much a team player. Not a star, like you said, but someone who almost any team (not named Heat or Thunder) would want as their starting SF.

All that being said, I think getting Deng now takes away our cap flexibility. But, if we could somehow land Deng AND Dwight or a LMA, vs Parsons and Dwight or LMA, I don't see how any would oppose.

I love getting Rip and a pick (or Mirotic) for Marcus Morris or some other filler.

We missed on Morris. It is what it is. I wanted Leonard and it still burns not seeing Leonard out there.

I agree (see my post above -- before I saw this post).

I was strictly speaking on the Bulls' perspective.

I hope Morris gets traded. I don't mind Terrence Jones getting traded neither. I'm all for an experience veteran that can help us win and draft picks.

Reg Parsons for Deng: I think people are putting way too much emphasis on being named an All-Star in the Eastern conference on one of the most popular sports teams in the nation when that team is missing their star player.

No way Deng is an All-Star in the Western Conference. If that's the judgement people are basing Deng's value on.... try again.

Also, keep in mind that for a GM that places such emphasis on player value and making smart acquisitions, Chandler Parsons is pretty much his dream player contractually in relation to the value he brings you on the basketball court.

Chandler Parsons is only getting traded in 2 scenarios -

-If he is bringing back a bonified 2nd star player.
    and
-If he's due to become a free agent in 2 years and there is a threat for another team to max him out in free agency.

Deng is better than Parsons, no ones going to debate that. Point is, that move makes ZERO sense for us. You give away Parsons and $12.5mil in cap room and we'd still be stuck with Patterson as our starting power forward with little cap space left. Not enough space to make a significant upgrade at the power forward even.

Deng is an upgrade on Parsons NOW because he has a lot more experience. He's also a superior defender and would really help this team out in regards to that but I think Chandler's defense should improve over time considering he was able to play good defense last year, so he is capable.

See DaSpark and KevC's posts previously about the upgrade on the basketball court.

But More importantly - Keep in mind the Rockets ultimate goal is to acquire star#2. Deng kills that notion with his cap eating contract next year. That's reason #1 first and foremost. When acquiring a player due to make a large sum next year, the first question you should ask yourself is "DOES HE MAKE US A TRUE CONTENDER." If the answer is no, you dont make the trade. Its as simple as that. Unless you just want to make the playoffs, and dont really care about truly contending.

If the Rockets already had star #2, and were looking at making a title run sure... we could start looking at minor upgrades like this one even if it put them slightly into the lux tax zone.

So a big fat NO to Deng despite the minor upgrade he could give you on the basketball court if there are any.

I agree 100%. I think we are misunderstanding each other.

I just had the notion that Parsons and Deng were fairly equal players regardless of contracts.

I understand in basketball you don't trade players, you trade contracts and what value comes with their contracts.

I was simply making the Player vs Player (which, isn't ever the case in trade scenarios) argument VS Player and Contract vs Player and Contract.

Value wise, Parsons is the third best contract in the league. Lebron being the first (considering there is a max, Lebron would get paid twice the amount by the likes of teams like Dallas, NJ, Lakers) and Paul George being the second.

The Bulls would trade Benny, Jordan's statue, and the United Center before they trade D. Rose. I live in Chicago. This city hasn't loved an athlete like that since His Airness himself.
