This looks great the first trade but i think Por will need a PF in return maybe and we can give them 2Pat. it helps us out in clearing of all those Forwards we have.

Rockets will be dumb to do that trade and unsure if he ll even sign with the rockets.
they could just wait in the offseason to try and sign DHoward

Would be amazing if Morey could add another star player to the team by the trade deadline. That would be two in the span of 4 months. But I believe he is just going to try to upgrade the bench.

Another star player in the lineup would be great but upgrading the bench will help the team as well.

    Pat Patterson and Tony Douglas
    ...For...
Wilson Chandler and 2nd round pick

Rockets get a do it all wing that wants out of Denver making stater's pay without being a starter (2013 Salary: $5,930,414 - 4 years remaining); Nuggets get a strech 4 from a well rounded power forward that is a rotation ready on any team in the league (the Rockets drafted 4 more just like him all of which need playing time - he is the best of the bunch at this time) and Three point shooting combo gaurd that has played well as of late on an expring contract. The 2nd round pick just to even up tha trade.

That would mean we give up max cap space in the off-season in order to get Wilson Chandler.

I had previously suggested that Milwaukee strikes me as a team that can put together the sort of package for Josh Smith that might interest Atlanta, and that Milwaukee is a pretty poorly managed organization, which means that they might be dumb/desperate enough to perceive Josh Smith as a "franchise player," and might stupidly give him the max or near-max contract that he wants and will receive from somebody.

I had suggested that Houston might want to get involved, so as to steal away the undervalued Ersan Ilyasova for next to nothing. Milwaukee likely undervalues Ilyasova, and Atlanta likely values cap space more than Ilyasova (which is stupid, since they're probably going to wind up blowing their cap space on guys who aren't as good as Ilyasova, but whatever).

Here is a sample three-way deal involving Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Houston that makes sense to me:

Josh Smith and Anthony Tolliver to Milwaukee

2013 Bucks first round pick (lottery protected), Patrick Patterson, Marcus Morris, and Beno Udrih (expiring contract) to Atlanta

    Ersan Ilyasova to Houston

[And no, I don't think Atlanta is really getting better offers than that for Josh Smith.]

Now obviously Ilyasova represents a big upgrade over Patterson, and makes Houston quite a bit better, immediately. He can play the "stretch four" in the Houston offense, he's a very good rebounder, he's highly efficient, he's a very good shooter, and he is signed to a very team-friendly contract ($7.9 mil in 2013-14, $7.9 mil in 2014-15, $7.9 mil in 2015-16, team option for the 2016-17 season).

Now, the question becomes this: if Houston were to make this deal, how would it impact their 2014-15 cap situation? That is, can they still afford to give Lebron James a max contract that summer, if Lebron decides that he likes Houston's supporting cast better than everybody else's supporting cast? I am not the expert that Bima Thug is, so I'm borrowing from his "Salary Cap Update" article here, and if he or someone else notices errors, please let me know, because I dislike misinformation.

    2014-15 payroll obligations (post-Ilyasova deal):

    James Harden $14.7 mil
    Jeremy Lin $8.4 mil
    Omer Asik $8.4 mil
    Ersan Ilyasova $7.9 mil
    Royce White $1.8 mil
    Terrence Jones $1.6 mil
    Donatas Motiejunas $1.5 mil
    Chandler Parsons $1.0 mil
2014 first round pick $1.2 mil (estimate)

Total payroll obligations to these nine players: $46.5 mil

If the salary cap for 2014-15 is $59 mil, then Houston would NOT be able to afford to sign Lebron to a max contract. They could, however, afford Lebron if they were to NOT trade for Ilyasova. Or they could trade for Ilyasova with the intention of him being a one and a half year rental, and trade him following the 2013-14 season to a team that can absorb his contract, which should not be a problem, since he is a very solid bang-for-your-buck player, someone will want him, especially for next to nothing.

Trading for Ilyasova is a bit risky, though. What if he gets hurt? What if his productivity declines? This makes him tough(er) to move, and risks the plan to sign Lebron that summer (and, again, this is what I believe Daryl Morey's ultimate goal is; not saying that it's going to happen, but I think that it might).

A much less risky way to upgrade the current roster is to trade Patterson and Morris for a player who represents an upgrade at the "power forward" position but whose contract expires following the 2013-14 season. The most obvious example is Shawn Marion, of course. This deal works:

Eric Gordon and Roger Mason to Dallas

O.J. Mayo, Patrick Patterson, Marcus Morris, one or two Dallas draft picks, and Dahntay Jones to New Orleans

    Shawn Marion to Houston

[And no, I don't think the expensive, whiny, unprofessional Gordon is worth anything more than that.]

Dallas gets its big name/big money young guy in Gordon yet still has plenty of cap space to play around with this summer to fill out the rotation. New Orleans unloads Gordon's contract, gets back a couple of cheap/young/"upside" players in Patterson and Morris, a two month rental in Mayo (who they may re-sign this summer, or, more likely, sign-and-trade for a draft pick and/or a cheap/young/"upside" player), and one or two draft picks. Houston replaces Patterson with Marion (big upgrade), and Morris with Motiejunas (probably a wash, maybe an upgrade).

If Howard gets traded here now, it's highly likely he would resign here.

I would like to demonstrate why it's foolish for fans to look at free agency as a viable way of significantly upgrading a team. Here are the players from the above list who I fully expect to be re-signed by whoever has their Larry Bird Rights (and are therefore effectively unavailable). These players will either be re-signed by their current teams or will be traded prior to the 2/21 trade deadline to a team that will ultimately re-sign them.

    1 Chris Paul
    2 Dwight Howard
    3 Andrew Bynum
    4 Nikola Pekovic
5 Josh Smith (I'd say there is a 100% chance he gets traded prior to 2/21)
    6 Andre Iguodala
7 David West (I will be very surprised if Indiana does not re-sign him)
8 J.J. Hickson (I will be very surprised if Portland does not re-sign him)
9 Brandon Jennings (I'd say there is close to a 100% chance he gets traded prior to 2/21, and whoever acquires him will re-sign him)
10 Kevin Martin (OKC likely re-signs him for something like four years, $24 mil)
11 Manu Ginobili (SA likely re-signs him for something like one year, $6 mil)
12 J.J. Redick (likely to receive something like four years, $24 mil from either ORL or whoever ORL might trade him to prior to 2/21)
13 Tony Allen (MEM likely re-signs him for something like four years, $24 mil)
14 Carl Landry (GS likely re-signs him for something like four years, $24 mil)
15 Jarrett Jack (GS likely re-signs him for something like four years, $16 mil)
16 Chase Budinger (MIN likely gets him for the qualifying offer)

Which means that, for all intents and purposes, here are the top twenty 2013 free agents who are ACTUALLY available (i.e., are either likely to switch teams or can be pried away from their current team with a strong offer):

    1 Al Jefferson (unrestricted)
    2 Paul Millsap (unrestricted)
    3 Tiago Splitter (unrestricted)
    4 Monta Ellis (unrestricted)
    5 O.J. Mayo (unrestricted)
    6 Jose Calderon (unrestricted)
    7 Tyreke Evans (restricted)
    8 Al-Farouq Aminu (restricted)
    9 Matt Barnes (unrestricted)
    10 Lamar Odom (unrestricted)
    11 Byron Mullens (restricted)
    12 Elton Brand (unrestricted)
    13 Samuel Dalembert (unrestricted)
    14 Earl Clark (unrestricted)
    15 Jeff Teague (restricted)
    16 Darren Collison (restricted)
    17 Gary Neal (restricted)
    18 Eric Maynor (restricted)
    19 Devin Harris (unrestricted)
    20 Mo Williams (unrestricted)

Since these are the only guys who are REALISTICALLY available, one can expect the teams with money to spend (i.e., lots of cap space) to throw a ton of money at the top several players on this list. Which means that the top several players are very likely off limits for Houston, a team that expertly manages the cap and that will not be interested in overpaying for these dudes. However, once all of these free spending teams blow their wads, Houston will likely elect to use up a portion of its cap space to scoop up one or more of the remaining free agents at bargain basement prices, which is precisely what happened this past summer when Houston scooped up the grossly undervalued Carlos Delfino for a bargain basement price ($3 mil in 2012-13, $3 mil team option for 2013-14 which will, I think, likely be exercised by Houston). For example, Houston may elect to scoop up the very good Brandan Wright for basically the same price as it paid for Delfino ($3 mil in 2013-14, $3 mil team option for 2014-15), and Wright would be an excellent backup big man for any team. And they may elect to scoop up Ronnie Brewer, a very good perimeter defender, for something like $2.5 mil in 2013-14 with a team option for $2.5 mil in 2014-15. And let's say they sign Devin Harris to the same deal as Brewer ($2.5 mil in 2013-14, team option for $2.5 mil in 2014-15).

Let's say they were to also get in on a Mavericks-Pelicans pre-trade deadline Eric Gordon deal wherein they obtain Shawn Marion and ship out Patrick Patterson. Let's also say they scoop up the three undervalued veterans suggested above (Wright, Brewer, and Douglas). They'd have a very nice roster in 2013-14 and would be well-positioned to sign Lebron James during the summer of 2014. Here would be my sample 2013-14 roster:

    Starting lineup

    PG Jeremy Lin
    SG James Harden
    SF Chandler Parsons
    PF Shawn Marion
    C Omer Asik

    Second unit

    PG Devin Harris
    SG Ronnie Brewer
    SF Carlos Delfino
    PF Donatas Motiejunas
    C Brandan Wright

End of the bench/Developmental League: Greg Smith, Royce White, Terrence Jones, Patrick Beverly, James Anderson

That's a strong first unit, a strong second unit, and excellent depth at the end of your bench and in the developmental league. All of these players have value at their prices. At the end of the 2013-14 season, many of these players would or could come off the books: Marion, Harris, Brewer, Delfino, Wright, Smith, Beverly, Anderson. So you'd have the flexibility to pursue Lebron, or whoever else. You'd also be able to make an in-season 2013-14 trade, as every single player on your entire roster is signed to a very good bang-for-your-buck contract and therefore provides good value. Players such as Marion, Harris, Brewer, Delfino, and Wright are not only useful role players but also have contracts that will or can come off the books at the end of the 2013-14 season, and are therefore "expiring contracts."

I like your thoughts, but if two of the three of these players: (Greg Smith, Royce White, Terrence Jones) are not in the rotation next year there is something wrong and DMtheGM should move on, IMO. I am on the fence about expections for Patrick Beverly and James Anderson going forward.

Word on the Streets is that Milwaukee Bucks are looking to move Monta Ellis...since the Rockets wants to go to a three guard set...I would rather go after Monta than Eric Gordon...and plus he can opt out of his contract at the end of the year since he has a player option...The Bucks may look past a playoff spot this year and make a deal to improve for next year instead of having to play against Heat!!!

    Lin / Ellis / Harden / Parsons / Asik

    Delfino/ Morris / Smith / Jones

Trade Patterson, Motiejunas, Douglas & Aldrich for Ellis

if he opts out we will have 20 million in Salary Cap in offseason and we really do not give up any players for the future....what yall think
