A two state solution is not the ideal that either side would like but is the most politically palatable to both the region and the rest of the world. My understanding is that most Israelis would be willing to accept a two state solution along roughly the 1967 borders and that most Palestinians would too provided that it actually could act as a state, control of its own resources, population and borders.

At the moment there isn't enough trust between the two populations to actually make a single state possible. Sometime in the future there might be but that is likely a long way off.

It's not criticism of Israel that does that - just like someone who criticizes Islamists should not be called "Islamophobe" or whatever.

But what is very telling is the thread title: "A Jew with a Conscience".

    Did you see Commodore's post?

What the hell - what is "guys like you" supposed to mean and how the hell do you dare to say that "guys like me" wanted to keep Mandela in prison?

The reason why I said a guy like you would probably have been in favor of keeping Mandela in prison is because at the time he was in prison conservatives worldwide generally were in favor of that because they viewed Mandella simply as a terrorist because of some of the means that he supported in the resistance against apartheid in South Africa. They did not want him get out of prison and actively opposed the worldwide movement for his release. Similarly they also opposed the divestiture and sanctions movement aganst south Africa.

Historical analogies are never 100% accurate but the movement to oppose apartheid in South Africa is strikingly similar to the movement wrt to Israel which was the topic of this thread

I suspect that sometime in the future the principal and most famous political prisoner from Palestine who is in Israeli jails will be released and he will eventually enjoy the stature that Nelson Mandela enjoys today and perhaps even a conservative like you will celebrate

It's always ironic how intolerant and irrational many members of the Jewish community become when Israel is being discussed.

This whole fiasco at Brooklyn College for example. The school is being threatened to have its budget cut just for allowing free speech and letting students discuss cutting support to Israel.

One assemblyman actually attempted to claim that allowing the discussion could lead up to the second holocaust.

I'm not talking about the OP here. I agree the title is weird. It's like saying, "A Muslim with a conscience" implying everyone else doesn't have one.

I'm talking about people getting up in arms about people criticizing Israel. And it's not the same as criticizing Islam as a religion. No one here is attacking Judaism or the Jewish people. But the state of Israel. It would be the same as people criticizing the Egyptian gov't.

You can't equivalate a state to a religion.

Another thing that is also sort of weird is that you find when there is are talk of America as a Christian nation, understandaby some of the people that are first to object are Jewish people since they don't feel comfortable with this and prefer to live in a country in which no one religion is privileged over others.

My original post was ill phrased and as I explained early on I did not intend to say Jewish people are less prone to have a conscience. The ill phrasing did allow the defenders of Israel right or wrong who try to avoid discussion of Israeli opresion of the Paelstinians a chance to divert or imply anti -semitism as usual.

Anti-zionism and anti-current right wing Israel is not anti-semitism. Now repeat after me. Anti-zionism or even anti-Israel is not anti-semitic

    Repeat after me:

    Anti-Islamism is not "Islamophobia".

Absolutely yes. I am a conservative-leaning liberal, pretty much middle of the road on most issues.

That's like saying Anti-Judaism is not Xenophobia. It kinda is.
