I know this has been floating around around for a while (three years or so maybe?) but I had not seen this EPIC trailer until now..

    <object width="560" height="315"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/b3dnwxUSK9k?version=3&amp;hl=en_US"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/b3dnwxUSK9k?version=3&amp;hl=en_US" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="560" height="315" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true"></embed></object>

I almost feel bad for the people involved...

Was Spielberg considered elite when E.T. came out?

Jaws, Close Encounters and Raiders, I would say he had had a pretty good rep by the time E.T. came out.

Did that first movie have a trailer that looked comparible to this one . . . with a comparible price tag?

Yep everybody already knew he would be... If this is that director's first movie then the studio is full of r****ds for giving someone $130 mil budget for their first film. In fact you don't give a movie that budget with a bunch of no-names.

You can't go by the trailer. You have to watch the whole thing.

Actually $130 Million these days doesn't buy that much. Most blockbusters are over $200 mil. The Avengers budget was $220 mil. and the Dark Knight Rises was between $250 and $300 Mil.
