has nothing to do with the texans view on this year. harvin isnt playing out the season without an extension it seems
If it is a second then yes but not worth trading a first for him. Also he is not worthy of the contract that he thinks he is going to get (top 5 WR money).
a 2nd seems pretty high for a guy with a questionable ability to stay healthy and some attitude baggage....but it is an interesting idea to having him inserted into this offense.
And I don't have a problem with it. They seem hell-bent of establishing a strong, unified locker room of unselfish, team-first guys. The Patriots have the same philosophy - they might be more willing to take a chance on a guy, but they also have the skins on the wall. And when the player gets out of line, they don't think twice about jettisoning them. Harvin would be a tremendous add; but his issue - beyond health, which is a valid concern - is that he's acted like a me-first guy.
The Patriots might have the skins on the wall because they understand that adding a couple of guys who likely get out of line on occasion, does not have to mean you base your entire team building philosophy on these types, but here and there it can help.
Albert Haynesworth, Randy Moss, Aqib Talib, Rodney Harrison...none of those guys were "unselfish, team-first" guys. The Pats take far and away more risks than the Texans. Harvin would be worth the risk IMO, but I don't think it will happen because I don't think he'll play without an extension.
The Patriots have a strong locker room that can typically convert a bad apple here and there. I have a feeling if the Texans ever landed a TO or Randy Moss type personality they would fall apart. They are mentally weak.
I dont even know why this is even being discussed no way lame mcnair goes after this guy we can only dream that the texans go out n do something big
yeah I would definitely trade a 2nd rd for him. or maybe the 3rd and the 6th. I hope that Percy can help the special teams, but I dont know how is going to play under Marciano.
Theres plenty of WR talent in the draft especially in the second and third round that could be immediate contributors. We can draft a WR and sign him to a rookie contract that would be far less than the max contract that Harvin is looking for. Why would we want to take on his baggage when we can draft a Tavon Austin, Robert Woods, Stedman Bailey or Tavarres King and have them under contract for four years and not have to pay a max contract?
Devier Posey was drafted in the third round way too early and the pick was a huge surprise. I remember after the pick that the ESPN commentator was cracking the joke that somebody should wake Devier up and let him know that someone drafted him. Keyshawn is a fourth rounder. Lestar was undrafted. Wide Receiver is the skill position that takes the longest time to develop. Receivers typically take a year to develop so expect a big jump from our current receivers. If Devier didn't tear his achilles I wouldn't suggest drafting a WR this year.
Define "immediate contributor". If you set the bar at 40 catches, 500 yards (roughly Walter's output last season) then only 7 rookies accomplished that (I'm including Streater who had 39 receptions). Of those 7, 3 were first round picks (Blackmon, Wright, and Floyd), 1 was a supplemental draft 2nd rounder (Gordon), 1 was a 3rd rounder (Hilton), 1 was a 4th rounder (Givens), and 1 was undrafted (Streater). So including Gordon who was taken in the supplemental draft, there were 10 receivers taken in the 2nd and 3rd round last year and only 2 could be classified as immediate contributors. Is it possible to find a guy in the 2nd and 3rd round who can step in and immediately be your #2? Sure. Is it likely? Not really. Like you said, receivers generally need time to develop. If you're just drafting for the future, that's fine. If you're really looking to replace Walter as the #2 immediately, drafting a receiver in the 2nd or 3rd probably isn't going to accomplish that task. At least not this year.
If Posey hadn't got hurt I still think the texans might have addressed WR in the draft, but it certainly wouldn't have been as high of a need.
I think the argument would be that the odds of any of those guys being as good as Percy Harvin is fairly low, especially in the next year or two, which is likely the primary window for the Texans right now.
According to a "high-ranking Vikings source," Percy Harvin "expects" an extension similar to the deals recently signed by Calvin Johnson and Larry Fitzgerald. The league's two highest paid receivers, Johnson scored an eight-year, $150.5 million pact last March, while Fitzgerald is entering year three of an eight-year, $128.5 million deal. Megatron's deal includes $60 million guaranteed, Fitz's $50 million. If true, it would certainly explain why the Vikings are at least exploring trading a player who's among the most gifted in the league, but also hot-headed with health question marks. However, it's extremely doubtful Harvin could even approach Fitz and Mega's deals, in Minnesota or elsewhere. We're likely only at the beginning of a long and winding ordeal. Source: ESPN.com You want to trade for that and stay under the cap? Or go with option 2... Draft a WR in the early rounds that can step in immediately or be developed into the number 2 role. We may not draft a WR that turns out to be as good as Percy Harvin, but your not going to commit cap suicide by signing Percy Harvin to a max contract. If we found a way to stay under the cap and sign Percy, how many players and who do you want to cut? Antonio Smith? Jonathan Joseph? Wade Smith? Owen Daniels? There is good WR talent in this draft. Tavon Austin and Robert Woods could start 2 receiver right away. Tavarres King and Stedman Bailey can be groomed for the 2 receiver.
He wants a contract close to Johnson and Fitzgerald yet has never had a 1000 yard receiving season? Good luck with that buddy.
I don't think resigning him was ever really a possibility. If you trade for him you have to accept that it is only for one year, which is why i think a 2 is just too much
