Quotes like this is why I do not like what McHale does sometimes. "He's not that guy, he's not Linsanity...he needs to be a singles and doubles hitter." Who is he to say what Lin can and can't do when he's already done it. That's not the way to instill confidence in a young player but rather a way of limiting him. smh~ If he said that about Gogi -> "Gogi's production last year was an aberration. He should only be a singles and doubles kinda guy and let the homerun hitters like Harden make the real contributions," more people would be upset. I mean, that's what he is basically saying, right? That he can't do what he did last year?? Admittedly, the height of Linsanity was high, but he earned it though. And he did it in his first starts. Why not allow him to do more heavy lifting? 28 minutes tonight? smh....
He has been the most consistent starter the whole season if you looked at a 5-game stretch chart from durvasa..
You mean the team...if the core stays his assist will probably go up next year due to more chemistry. If he takes more a few more shots and get better at his jumpers his points will go up a bit. I think a good average for him on this team will be around 16 points and 7 assists next year, assuming he gets a good share of the ball handling and take a few more shots per game. How this team is run there is no way Lin is going to get a consistently high number of shots to even approache the high teens in points or 8+ assist per night.
I love when people throw around the figure $24 million to exagerate Lin's salary to skew their arguments. For the record, Lin's contract is structured to count for $5mil/yr against the rockets cap for the first 2 years and about $8.4mil for the third due to a cap loophole which takes into account the average annual salary of the contract. This figure is slightly above the average salary for starting point guards in this league. Guys like George Hill, Devin harris, Rodney Stuckey, and Goran Dragic all make around the same amount. Considering his age, potential upside, and all the extra international revenue he brings to the organization, I don't see how this contract doesn't make perfect business sense for the Rox.
It counts for $8M against the cap in all 3 years. The actual payout is 5/5/15 (irrelevant for luxury tax or team cap composition and freedom to add pieces), but it counts as 8/8/8 against the cap (only thing that really matters to influence what other players you are allowed to add to the team). Under no scenario, neither cap nor actual payout, is it ever 5/5/8.
Incorrect. In terms of cap hit, it's $8.33 for the next 3 years. Had the Knicks matched Lin's contract, it would've been 5/5/15. But with the Rockets, the cap hit is spread out evenly.
first things first lets all acknowledge that linsanity doesnt happen without Tyson Chandler. that said, if/when houston decides to get an elite/semi-elite big, lin's numbers will go back to linsanity-like numbers. asik is NOT an offensive threat off the roll. for example, last year with tyson chandler lin would lob for an alley once a game perhaps? this is where lin got tons of assists. pick n pop with amare as well. this year ppat provides that role and recently its been solid. also off the pick, he will be much harder to defend because he can always lob/pass to a big to finish inside, so you cant double him as easy. he was much more free in ny because of this. he could pass, shoot, or drive after the pick. that's the core of linsanity, effective pnr. in short, lin plays best with bigs. they bail him out with their ability to catch and finish in the paint, and it frees him up to either pass/shoot/drive. as i have said before, its no coincidence they went after him and howard. that was plan a for houston
Spot on...that's why Howard this summer is going to be really interesting. This is assuming Howard is the old Howard...this team is going to be even more unstoppable.
Whatever the case, the point is, all those other players I mentioned are making around 8 million per year as well and do not have the upside Lin does. We all saw his potential last year in NY. Now I don't believe he will be able to match those numbers consistently but there is definite potential there and given his work ethic and bball iq, I'm totally willing to take that gamble for 8 mil/yr.
Tough luck, guy has played under 3k minutes in the NBA. People seem to expect that he'll play like an above average starter when he's played the minutes of a guy just getting started on his 2nd season in the league. Consistency will come. If he's still struggling with it this time next season then we can talk.
Any pg that plays with a stud like Tyson will have their stats go up if they can throw a decent lob pass. Plus D'Antoni's pg oriented system probably inflated his numbers as well.
that's unfair to say. felton thus far hasnt put up linsanity numbers... anyways the point i was trying to make was effective pnr. lin needs it. his great first step only goes so far.
I didn't say Felton would put up Linsanity numbers but he does get a lot of easy asts just simply by lobbing it to Tyson. I agree that Lin would benefit from a better pnr/finisher whether it be from a center or pf. I hate to see ppl make it seem like Asik is holding him back from being Linsanity though.
Lin's reduced numbers are from playing with Harden much more than not having a scoring big man to throw to. Same thing happened when Melo came back last year. At this point Lin & Harden have already built up a much better chemistry than Lin + Melo did in that brief stretch so it's not really anything to worry about. There's a lot of room for improvement but with their youth & work ethic there's no reason to bet it won't come.
Upside?? What's the point of upside when you don't even leverage what he currently brings to the table? What's the point of paying for upside when all you expect and want him to do is to make the simple passes on offense and stay in front of his man on D? Mchale is basically trying to build Jeremy as a basketball player from the ground up, negating his natural instincts and skillets.
Huh? D'Antoni isn't the coach of the Knicks any more. When Felton did play under D'Antoni, he did put up good numbers.
Frankly, the only assist numbers that matter are the team's as a whole. We have a pretty good assist record and thus we're getting some quality wins. All that matters. Asik is arguably our most important piece, if he is holding some people's numbers back, tough cookie. And btw, that is a ridiculous notion which is predicated on the fact that individual numbers matter more than wins. Lin don't care, neither should you. (Not you superstar~)
