I understand the hesitations about injuries and even attitide, but to say Howard is not a clear upgrade to Asik is just disingenuous. Howard is the best center in the game, period.

Peyton Manning had a history of being healthy too. Guess that means there wasn't much of a risk this offseason

For real, look at that small vet min. contract he was forced to sign, not to mention that ****ty season he had.

Actually, your numbers are completely wrong because you are proceeding from a false assumption about Bird rights. The Bird rights' 7.5% raise only applies to years after the 1st year of the contract. Howard is still subject to the same 1st year maximum salary limit regardless of whether the team he signs with holds his Bird rights or not. He cannot sign for 107.5% of his current salary with LAL. He is subject to the same 30% maximum starting salary for a 9-year vet.

Ideally, the Morey can tempt Howard with the prospect of more money. If Howard signs a 1-year deal with HOU at season's end, next year he will be eligible for 35% of cap starting salary instead of 30% (assuming that in one year he is still worth the max). He can make quite a bit more money that way if he is still a max player in a year, and the Rockets will probably gladly pay the bit extra in a year to mitigate the risk of "T-Mac, Episode II."

    ;)

Coming into today howard has missed a grand total of 25 GAMES OVER 9 YEARS. Thats less than 3 games missed per season. Yes he currently has injuries but to say he's injury prone and washed up is completely erroneous. He is STILL THE BEST CENTER IN THE NBA. Dude just isn't happy in LA and i think he'll have a "miraculous" comeback once he's happy again.

Do you really want to worry about he deciding to leave all season?

howard is staying in LA. too much of a money difference, and too much of a marketing difference between LA and houston. let's face it, clutch city isn't hollywood. i'm done thinking about howard. sure, he'd be a great fit as the finishing big for JL's lobs. but it's not happening. i want to homegrow the guys we have now. asik is getting better at catching passes (kind of)

Damn it! The Thunder traded us an injury prone SG who is going to destroy out team for years! I know he's injury prone because he is going to miss tomorrows game! That makes 3 games this year he will miss!

We should have stuck with Kevin Martin

But Howard+Pat gives you the best C in the game along with cap space to sign any of Millsap/Jefferson/JSmith/Dwest.

You may be right but what happens if he does come here and isn't happy? I am sure he would be happy at first, but what if he doesn't think he is getting enough touches halfway through the season? He is showing with the Lakers he doesn't like the pick-n-roll playing with one the greatest p-n-r point guards in history. He is showing he is a me first type of guy and not team first. Even if he is healthy, and that is a big IF, what happens when we are paying a guy 20 million a season to whine and pout?

Man, it was hard enough figuring out Lin/Harden with enough ball touches in the beginning of the season. Imagine Dwight coming in and being a diva. Omer is a work horse who is unselfish and doesn't complain, and the rest of the team has chemistry thats clearly showing on the court now. Bringing in Dwight might not work, but if he somehow has a change in attitude the rockets would be dangerous as all hell. In the end, it comes down to Dwights willingness to not be pissed about touches if harden or lin are doing their thing distributing or scoring. Dwight has to come to houston unselfish is the key here, and we would have a dangerous duo of Dwight and Asik to switch between.

The first year of his new salary should be 105% instead of 107.5%. But you're wrong about his being subject to the 30% maximum starting salary for a 9yr vet. His current salary is already above that limit. And the 1st year of his next contract has a maximum that cannot be lower than 105% of his current salary, even if it exceeds 30% of the cap. So, unless next year's cap takes an enormous leap, it's safe to say that we can safely ignore that restriction, since his starting salary will be over 30% of maximum based off of 105% of his current.
