There was no Bird right vs no tax with Harden: He got both in HOU.

In a direct competition such as this, Bird Rights has the security advantage of the 5th year, while no tax has the financial advantage of more money, and substantially more money in the 5th year.

On a max contract, Howard will make more money in the first 4 years with HOU than with LAL due to the tax break. If HOU re-signs Howard to the max in 4 years, he would make substantially more money in the 5th year with HOU than he would if he'd signed the Bird 5th year with LAL, due to jumping a max bracket, the probable cap increase, and no tax. He is actually giving up a financial advantage for a security advantage signing with LAL for 5 years, a substantial one in the 5th year, even. That's how much of a financial advantage no tax offers.

Of course, Howard can gain an even bigger financial advantage by signing with HOU for 1 year, then sign one bracket up for 4 years next year. Naturally, this requires him to give up the security advantage for the (very substantial) financial advantage (not to mention giving him one more year of the diva Dwightmare control he probably craves). Frankly, I wouldn't rule out this 1-year scenario. It will be a 1-year trial run for both parties. If both parties like the fit in a year, Howard can then sign the 4-year top bracket max, making substantially more money than the 5-year Bird contract he can sign with LAL at season's end.

This was already factored in the the above analysis and the analysis in the last post.

Well, it's not like Howard is an offensive beast...or a defensive one at the moment, either...

Dwight is having his worst season, and is still outplaying Omer

James Harden and Lin would average more assists with Dwight catching their passes than Asik

You can't assume he'll ever have a good season again with his injury history.

Yeah, I honestly wouldn't want the Rockets to pick him up even in FA. We've been down that road before, we know where it goes.

Asik has an injury history. He's had surgery on his knees TWICE. 2008 and 2011

Every big man HAS an injury history, you can't very well be that big without screwing things up, not all of them has an injury history like Howard.

    anyone think this is feasible?

    Asik/Josh Smith for Howard
    Rockets Get Howard
Hawks get Earl Clark/draft pick and one of (Patterson,Jones, Morris)
+ aldrich to make the number work
I would think that would be better for the lakers then anything possible scenario. I think it would be worth it for us to do it...and if the hawks are really out of the hunt might be as good as they get.

If Rockets go past the deadline and dont make a move there going after Howard or Bynum so alot of fans might be upset lol but if they do gets an offseason gets healthy who knows we might get the Dwight that the Lakers thought they would get

Have you compared asik's last 7 games against Howard's? Asik is clearly trending upward and getting better. As his offense improves, which is clearly happening, his overall impact grows enormously. Howard is clearly the better player but, depending on the gravity of the back and should issue, I would have concerns giving up asik for Howard. Would rather sign Howard as a free agent and keep asik as a backup or flip asik for a really good power forward. Then you have harden, Howard, asik/replacement pf, parsons and Lin.

A bad back and shoulders compared to bad knees? I wouldn't but Asik's injuries as less of a concerns than Howard's.

You're right about Howard but he's still better than Asik. There is no "if and or buts" there.

I wouldn't argue otherwise, when healthy and motivated, Howard is the best center in the NBA hands down. I just think that the team would be better to spend on a PF than on a center. The gap from Asik to Howard isn't as great as the gap from Patterson to Smith for example. Factor in Howard's constant injuries and Asik's upsise and I think it's obvious that we shouldn't be in the market for Howard or Bynum.

    Howard the basketball player: yes
    Howard the patient: hell no

I feel for Philly enough and I'm damn sure I don't want round #2 of the Yao & Tracy Cirque du Clinique.

I believe I heard that players get paid from according to where their games were played at. Therefore, anytime a rocket plays a game in LA, they still have to pay income tax. Not sure if true.

As a Laker he'd play 10 games out of 82 without income tax. Where as a Rocket he'd play 49 games out of 82 games in Texas, Tennessee, and Florida.

How do incentive bonuses get taxed? Playoff bonuses get taxed? Because they are bigger here and the likelihood of Howard making the playoffs and hitting his incentives are higher and longer (young team) here than in LA.
