If you live $100 tip no matter where in America, the employees must give you oral or hand jobz/ your choice... Just a thought next time you go to some place that offers tips.
the american tipping system is not gonna change. tip what you want. i'm in the business, tip well and you get it back in spades.
Pretty much it, for nightspots and hangouts for sure, and when you know you're going back to a place. Not just for customers, for contractors to these places too. I did light security at a bar once, a waitress complained on me, so they didnt want me back I went in there again just as a regular customer, actually got served by her, left a big fat tip intentionally. Hoping maybe a nice "mention" can be had from it. Later got seemingly more friendlier treatment, may have helped in having our services retained. Pure BRIBERY, and it works money talks. Its different for a regular restaurant and eatery though. I don't think the majority of those places should have the current tip systems. I think it does encourage a bit of uppity "borgeois" mentality in the people who can "throw money around" , rubbing it in to the people barely scraping by who probably appreciate the experience more than them, but its tough on them to pay the extra gratuities. And to me nothing is worse than waiters whining about their tip amounts at the end of the day. All of them feel they shoulda got 25% more than what they're taking home.
for real. they're there to serve you yes, but not to make you feel like a king/queen. some people act as if it's a cardinal sin to not have their drink refilled before they reach the bottom of the glass.
Wow it's funny you said this, because this *literally* happened to me in Japan. No exaggeration. Tipping is bullsh!t
That is the whole point of a tip. The better the service, the better the tip. Unfortunately, wait staff mentality has come to expect 18% at every table, regardless of their performance. If a server feels compelled to offer me the bare minimum service, which is all I really require, then they will get a bare minimum tip. And making sure my drink doesn't hit the bottom for long is part of the bare minimum service.
If i'm offended by the service, i will let it be known...at the end (to the manager if need be) but i still leave a tip. The more vociferously i complain, the larger the amount i tip. I don;t want it even thought that my complaint relates to $$$.
If you don't have enough money to tip, you don't have enough money to go out. Keep your cheap ass at home. Barstaff and waitstaff didn't invent the system they're working in. That system depends on tips, and works from the expectation that there will be tips. You can lie to yourself and say that you're "protesting the system" by refusing to tip, but what you're really doing is being a cheap ****.

On average I spend about $20 at a restaurant... so I leave a $5 tip. It's just a habit. Some of my friends carry that little tipping card that lets your know how much you should tip relative to your bill. Very embarrassing when they pull it out. Makes us look like cheap ass brahs. I'm also fortunate enough to get pretty good waitstaff every time I go out.
i would have done the exact same thing you did... i'm a pretty generous tipper and don't mind tipping for great service
Thank you! It's one of the easier jobs you can find, yet there are waitresses out there making more than a lot of fairly educated folks. My wife has a friend who went to college for a year, just to make money off of financial aid. She dropped out, became a waitress at an Applebee's and makes nearly as much as my wife (wife is a nurse). That's not saying that I don't tip, because I do. You can guarantee, though, if you give me poor service, and it's not busy, you're getting only 5-10%. I think I've left no tip maybe once or twice in my life. I regularly tip 20% for good service. I'm just saying, though. It's not hard to bring me a drink when I need it. Half the time, the waitress doesn't even bring my food...
