From a guy that reps Nirvana constantly , they have to be one of the most overrated bands ever. If you take career as a hole as opposed to individual album successes Smashing Pumpkins wins.
Completely true, I remember on one of the listings for best solos ever they had Smells Like Teen spirit on there...which imo is a terrible solo.
I've already chimed in the first time around. But if I had to put these bands in the context of Radiohead, Nirvana = Creep. Smashing Pumpkins = everything after that. Yeah I said it.
It really doesn't matter what everyone's personal preference. Smashing Pumpkins are always going to be seen as a very good band with some great albums, and Nirvana is always going to be seen as THE band of the 90s and one of the most important bands in rock history. Simple as that. For really good hard rock, -Bleach, Incesticide, Nevermind, and In Utero are as solid of a hard rock discography as Appetite for Destruction, Lies, and Use Your Illusion I and II.
You're in the minority, and it's no wonder you have Rookie as your status. You act like one. Grow up.
Smashing Pumpkins for me. They are just better for me personally. Nirvana had some songs I really like with my favorite being "come as you are." But when it comes to "grunge" Pearl Jam is king and that takes away some of the Nirvana appeal for me. Also I had (have?) more fun listening to Green Day than Weezer.
i am not saying who the better band is but siamese dream tips it all i may have already said that in this old thread that someone made a new account to comment on
Feel like Billy Corgan is the worst singer of a popular band that comes to my mind. Absolutely can't stand his voice and feel like they'd be 1000x times better if a new singer would do all thier old stuff.
These questions are always a matter of opinion. I bet most people ITT will favor Nirvana. However, being a huge Pumpkins fan, I must say they were vastly different and better than the hits they had on the radio (Bullet with Butterfly wings, Today, Mellon Collie, 1979, etc). If someone picked up an old cd of Gish, Siamese Dream or Adore, they would see what I am talking about. They had some deep stuff and had a evolving very versatile sound that was influenced by Pink Floyd to INXS. Anyone who wants to explore some new music, check out some of these tracks by the Pumpkins: I am one, Bury me, Rhinocerous, Shame, Once upon a time, Mayonaise. I am not that familiar with Nirvana aside from 10 or so songs but I think the Pumpkins were more poetic and diverse.
I can't believe I missed this thread the first time around. My opinion is extremely biased because sp is my favorite band.... If you only listened to their singles I understand people seeing a connection between the two bands. Outside of stand inside your love and cherub rock their singles are not very impressive. But **** their albums are pure gold. Songs like mayonaiae, thru the eyes of ruby, Galapagos, behold the nightmare etc are masterpieces and I don't feel anything nirvana did is on the same level. When I first started listening to sp I couldn't stand Billy's voice, but I still remember the first time I heard here is no why. The song pulled me in and made a connection with me, and ever since they have been my favorite band. Nirvana is a good band too, and I listen to them all the time. They just don't have any songs that really grab me.
