I really like TJ and Tate is an exceptional talent, but int the case of Tate his "I'm always injured" routine is wearing thin. Wasn't he in street clothes at the last NE game? Why? I am ready for him to go, but I imagine his stock is pretty low. For some reason the team doesn't seem all that high on TJ, so trade him for needs. I would like to see Keenum start to get some chances (come in with big leads, if we have any).
Neither will be traded, b/c the Texans have a very good chance at getting a total of ten picks this draft. a 3rd from Mario, a 4th/5th from Breisl and a 7th from Dressen. I say double dip ILB one preferably early, one NT, one WR also early, one OT, one TE and one Saftey for a total of 7 picks. With the last 3 picks shore up special teams type of players maybe a returner, a FB and an OLB with upside like Braman.
Do teams trade for backup QBs? I mean, they do if they're bringing him in to be a starter, but TJ is not that guy. But do teams trade for QBs they intend to remain as a backup? Players like that seem to change teams via free agency, not trade. I think you'd have a hard time finding a taker for Yates, at least one that would give you anything to make it worth it.
You are right about TJ not being a starter but in some cases back up QB are attractive such as Matt Flynn before Russell Wilson, Matt Schaub was traded for to 2nd rounders, and Rivers/Brees in SD.
Yeah, but Schaub was brought in to be the starter. Even though he didn't win the job, Flynn was brought in to be the starter (and was acquired via free agency, not trade). I'm sure it happens occasionally, but I don't imagine most teams are willing to give up assets for somebody they'd have penciled in as their backup QB.
To be fair, no one thought there were any Wilson's in last year's draft either. Or any Kaepernick's in the draft before last.
Texans 2013 Draft Talk / Mock Drafts I know there are a few threads pertaining to this already but lets conglomerate all the talk to one (if there already is one please lock). Below is a list of the most current mocks I've found just to give you a scope of what analysts are thinking. http://www.draftcountdown.com/ http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/mock-drafts/gil-brandt/155116 Now personally my opinion is: First Round: Big TE (Zach Ertz) or Big Wide receiver (Cordarrelle Patterson) First Option: Big TE Why: Schaub has a weak arm but is accurate at close range and needs big solid targets to throw to. Owen Daniels is slow but still decent and god forbid he gets injured and the next option be Garret Graham. Second Round: Big Wide Receiver (Da'Rick Rogers) or ILB (Kevin Reddick) First Option: Big WR. At this point Patterson will be off the board and Da'Rick would be a good option. Sure hands and is a big target. Why: Whynot? Everyone know this needs to be addressed. WR is deeper then TE in this draft and the drop off isn't as great. Adding Zach Ertz and Da'Rick will go along way. Ideally the Texans will find a way (trade picks / players) to move up in the draft to get Zach Ertz, Da'Rick Rodgers, and either Kevin Minter or Ogletree. These three will go a LONG way to suring up weak spots.
Could someone post the ESPN Insider mock from Kiper/McShay that was released yesterday? Maybe show the Texans pick and spoiler the rest? Thanks
Ask and you shall receive....this is Mel kipers version... Quinton Patton Analysis: Houston needs to find another weapon for Matt Schaub. Andre Johnson will be 32 this summer, and if he's out of the lineup, the drop-off is significant. If you're a fan that hasn't seen anything from Patton, roll the tape from his game against Texas A&M. All he did to the Aggies was 21 catches, 233 yards and 4 TD catches. Simply put, Patton was really, really hard to cover in 2012, and when he went to the Senior Bowl against some of the top competition in the draft, he didn't get any easier to cover. Love the way he release from pressure, can set defenders up and work the sides or the middle of the field, using long arms to snatch the ball away from his body. A rising player meets a good fit.
And here is Todd Mcshay version Keenan Allen, WR, California The Texans need more legitimate pass-catching options outside of Pro Bowl WR Andre Johnson. Allen lacks elite top-end speed, but he's a great athlete with a good frame, and his ball skills are much-improved from early in his career. He would give QB Matt Schaub another quality option and help open up some room for Johnson.
Tyler Bray might be who you are looking for. Has the accuracy, arm strength, and pocket mobility. The only problem is his frame and leadership/character.
ZBS linemen can be found in later rounds and finding new (immediate) starters isn't a top priority. I do like Barrett Jones a lot, since he can step in and help at almost any of the OL positions. That's invaluable. I still hold that the expectation of Cushing returning to man the ILB spot (solo, many downs) will translate into waiting until round 2 or 3 for a new interior backer. They're looking for a Robin, not Batman. Who knows what the thought process is with WR. Posey makes it even tougher to figure out - is he penciled in or are they concerned he may be out to start the year? Do they like Patterson or Allen enough to use their first at the position? There's just no way they go QB early given how weak this incoming class seems to be. Take a QB in the first 3 rounds, and you automatically buy yourself a mopey unhappy Schaub. Better strike gold if you do. I'm all for it if someone like Barkley falls too far, but think it's far more likely that Smith/Kubiak mine the late rounds like they did with Yates. There's almost no way in the world they go DB first. You would need Quin to walk (sadly a possibility) as well as Vaccaro to plummet for no good reason. Elam is another S with first round value, but I don't see how he'd be the best player available when we pick and I doubt Wade would want a centerfielder over a front 7. OLB will be a depth move, whether or not Barwin goes. Of course, they did take Mercilus first a year ago for depth. I don't think they'll have the luxury of doing that again. Antonio Smith is X-Factor #2. If he's cut and not given a reworked deal, you've got to find a new starter. Maybe I'm wrong, but Crick showed me almost no promise he could step in. Bennie Logan might be on the radar. We need to look at upgrading NT regardless of Cody's free agency. He did a commendable job there as a converted DT, but we were weakest against the run up the middle. Maybe you want to argue that Wade's scheme calls for a non-traditional nose that penetrates rather than clogs the A gaps...but Cody was a complete zero in that regard. Nothing. No sacks, no stuffs. Teams found they could push him to the outside with ease and create freeways for backs or QBs up the middle. Mitchell's not much better. Is Wade even interested in a real NT? I don't know, but I would be slobbering if Jenkins or Hankins slipped to us at #27. Jesse Williams is another option.
I'd love to see the Texans take this guy if he drops, but that would stir things up, and Kubiak doesn't like doing that.
I would not want to touch Bray. With a team full of NFL talented receivers he was not accurate. He struggles to read defenses and to hit the short to medium passing routes. His passing reportoire consisted mainly of throwing the ball long up for grabs to one of his receivers. 95% of all his snaps came out of the shotgun and he is not ready to run a pro style offense.
I want Matt Barkley, I truly think he has star potential and that Lane Kiffen just isn't a good coach. He will drop to us in the first and I know it's not our biggest need but who cares, it's unlikely that Ogletree or Cordarrelle Patterson drop to us, so let's just get the LB and the WRs in later rounds.
