People aren't ready for the next gen consoles -- there isn't going to be any kind of rush to buy a PS4. The current gen is still really good for the average gamer -- I can't even imagine what a PS4 could offer that would make me drop 400-500 dollars on a new system. Check the weak sales of Wii U for evidence (it's cheaply priced too).
Anyone else feel like PC Gamers are excessively aggressive? It's fine if you worship your PC and all of it's amazing capabilities but we just prefer console...
Agreed, not much of a time thing. Look at the huge difference between Xbox and Xbox 360, I fear Xbox 720 would just be the same with some added features.
This. It's interesting to read rumors of the next gen systems, but if there isn't a seriously compelling case to buy them, forget it.
While I am not thinking much about a new Xbox Console, still think it would be cool if Microsoft made a portable device.
Both consoles will likely use Blu-ray (pretty much all the leaks suggest/say this). Probably 50GB, though maybe support for 100GB+ will make it in there (probably more like with PS4). I'm sure both will push digital distribution, but I think both feel it is a little too early to go 100% DD. Wii U sales aren't really good for this argument. Adam Sessler actually used them to prove the opposite claim: <iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/_wAZDHdU0eo" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> (also lots of other problems...including just the fact that Nintendo has struggled with launches in general lately) As I've said before, Sony and MS likely know all of this, and given rumors/speculation, they're both definitely looking into implementing new features/services that will make them stand out compared to the PS3/360. Will it be worth it? Who knows. Nikkei providing details about an exciting new feature for PS4 (yes, yet another report coming out today): http://gematsu.com/2013/02/nikkei-ps4-to-utilize-gaikai-have-expanded-social-features OK, I'm joking (sort of). Here's the full article: Not a lot of info, but Nikkei reports are pretty much as good as it gets. Was kind of hoping they'd fit Cell (or something Cell-like) into the PS4 to help with random jobs (maybe physics, video processing, or whatever) as well as PS3 BC. Speculation that you can emulate Cell with GPU compute units (and Sony has patents for this I think), but not looking for for PS3 BC with PS4. Still interested in seeing what they have planned with Gaikai.
New gen consoles will sell. Will sell very well. Never underestimate the consumer's constant desire to get the latest and greatest gadgets.
All it takes is one of your friends to buy it an then bam..you have to buy it too if you want to play online with them. The ONLY reason I went with xbox as opposed to ps3, is that all my friends were on xbox and almost no one was on ps3. I still play with most of them often.
Wii U is very different. Wii was a huge hit, but for its price and casual gamer crowd. The casual gamer isn't the kind that needs to go out and have the next big thing. And adding a tablet controller isn't exactly something casual gamers really get it up for. On the surface the idea of a tablet makes it seem more complicated. You don't realize how many people simply were never interested in the other systems simply for the number of buttons and joysticks. What will make everyone spend the money is the games. They'll also make sure there aren't as many available immediately after launch. Pent up demand is a good thing for high priced consoles.
I love keeping up on what's coming out. I won't buy a new system until at least a year after it comes out, possibly more. I want to see long term what kind of issues there are with the next gen, and let them get worked out somewhat. I want to see which way both consoles will be going with their library. I also want to see the reviews at that time and compare. But I like having an idea of what to gear up for, and what they are able to deliver on.
If Apple would put their fingerprints on one of these consoles, I am sure it would sell like hot cakes.
Just speaking in terms of OS, I think is Google were to add their fingerprints with Android OS on PS4, that would also make it intriguing. I don't know if there have been any rumors for Microsoft's plan when it comes to their OS on the new Xbox, but I think adding a part of Windows would help them also.
There have definitely been rumors about MS pushing Windows with Durango. The leaked specs note it has 8GB of DDR3 RAM. This is far from great for gaming (the RAM is too slow, and it is debatable how important 8GB is), but the console seems built around that (i.e., 8GB RAM is the most important part of Durango). Leaks have said the OS might take up 1GB-3GB, which would be ridiculously huge (Orbis is speculated to reserve 512MB, and PS3/360 reserve around 30MB IIRC). Not sure if it will literally be running Windows, but definitely some interesting design decisions with this setup. I think it would be really smart if Sony embraced Android (or some sort of Google collaboration) with the PS4. Thus, it will not happen. It couldn't be the main game OS (without major tweaks anyway), but if they could come up with some solution that would let the PS4 run Android apps/services, it could really help. Maybe even make it a Google TV box or something. MS will be pushing this in their new box, and I don't really think Sony can match those efforts (but Google can, and would probably do it better...plus this would let Sony focus on gaming). edit: Sony could use PS4 to (re)launch/push Gaikai, then migrate out to Android devices in general to push that as a service. Would be smart. And again, won't happen because of that.
