I'd say no to Millsap. He's not elite, and a $8-10 million/year contract would restrict our ability to get an elite player.

I'm almost positive one of our 5-6 PFs will develop into a Paul Millsap level player.

Don't need milsap, rockets have young PFs that has a chance to be better, we need a for sure star upgrade at PF(love etc) not a middle of the pack PF

3-4 years 30-40 million is the max i'd do for him. Which would be a decent signing but would rather wait for something better.

I don't see any sence in trading for Millsap
We have to give some young players or picks now to Utah
and the next year 9 or 10 million per year to Millsap?
Develop terence Jones, 2Pat and Montejunas. One of this 3 will be better than Millsap.
Save the money and use better the cap space

He got paid off of 16 games! No playoffs but 16 games in the regular season were he captured the nation and the biggest media market the U.S. but I would say 4-5 is a more then fair offer what he had done and what he is doing. Oh yeah I think he would be my starting Pg anyways.
Jarret Jack, Mike Conley, Jameer Nelson and Greivis Vasquez but he is on a rookie deal. Lin is a middle of the pack PG

Based exclusively on on-court performance - so not factoring in upside, intangibles, off-court business etc. Lin is underachieving on his contract. He should be getting paid $5M - $6M per year, imo, which isn't much of a difference.

Factoring in his youth & inexperience, the market for PGs, how much money he generates for Les, the publicity and goodwill he's created for the Rockets organisation, coachability and locker-room chemistry I'd say he's worth the $24m 3 years contract already.

Patterson is playing out of position, is still young and on his rookie contract. He'd be an exceptional back-up PF for any team.

Trading them both to a conference competitor for an expiring would be a terrible move. They were always going to lose at least one of Al Jeff or Millsap anyway, and now they only improve with the addition of two very affordable pieces that will significantly improve their roster. Lin is better than any guard they have on that roster, and Patterson would be a perfect fit on a cheap contract to go in their big rotation of Kanter/ Favors. They'd have space for a max contract + then some.

Meanwhile we have an expiring Millsap who is due for at least $10M per year, we wouldn't even know how much he could fetch on the market as an UFA and he could hurt our potential to sign a max.

People forget ppat is only 23, yo. At the same age, his numbers are similar to Millsap's at age 23, minus a couple of boards. You'd thin ppat will learn to box out eventually right?
I'd rather stick it out with what we have for another season than to spend it on pauly, who will probably want josh smith money. =/

    Re Millsap vs. Patterson:

Millsap may be a slightly better defender, but I think defensively the two are fairly close, actually.
Patterson is a good to very good pick&roll defender and his man-to-man defense is OK. He's also the more active of the two on defense. Millsap has the edge on help defense -- better at playing the passing lanes, drawing charges & a bit more of a shot-blocking "presence" -- but otherwise Millsap is just OK in the other departments IMO.

On offense Patterson is the better shooter, though Millsap is obviously no slouch himself and I think at times the Jazz's offensive system hurts Millsap, whereas Patterson is often the beneficiary of open looks as spotting open is usually about as much as he's asked to do.

Where Millsap is clearly better is 1.) rebounding (I think the difference between the two is fairly big here) and 2.) creating off the bounce and seeking contact instead of avoid it, hence the much higher FTA/FGA%.
Millsap is also a better all-around player. Patterson just doesn't quite have the feel for the game that Millsap has.

Oh, and can we for once leave Lin out of a thread? Please?

Wrong Haywood is better and you can argue Mo Williams and Foye being equal if not better

the rockets need another player who can play minutes at center and defend in that position. gibson's capable of filling that role.

Last night on NBATV Dennis Scott said Millsap needed to play like he played 3 years ago when everyone wanted him.

Millsap @ age 27 is shooting a career low FG% of .479 down from .531 in 2010-2011. He used to be a great midrange shooter. He took 42% of his shots from midrange and hit 47% of them. Now he takes 29% of his shots from midrange and only hits 31% of them.

You can blame the loss of DWill or the fact that most of the Jazz offense is now run through Jefferson, but for whatever reason Millsap hasn't been the highlight machine he was back in 2010.

Morey has faith in Terrance Jones... He's not going to trade for a PF. Especially one who is 6-8 and is going to want $11-12 million a year.

    id rather have josh smith.

we need big men who can finish strong at the rim. Greg smith is not ready yet. WE cant have a 5 who sucks at finishing at the rim (asik) along with weak 4s (patterson, morris).

You will see Lin and Harden's assist numbers go up if we had better big men finishers. Asik is horrible at the rim and Morris and Patterson dont play above the rim in the paint.

Milsap is probably seeking a 5 year 60 million dollar type deal from the Jazz and since they are the only team that can offer him 5 years I see them eventually agreeing to 5/55 or so. Remember the 3/25 was the most they could offer him in the cba until he hits free agency. I dont see that guy signing with the Rockets for any less that 4/48+. There are 5-6 teams that have the cap room to make it happen including the Jazz.

I don't buy any of this.

I'm not saying Millsap is our answer (although I'd be cool with him on the team). But a team's dynamic changes, and Millsap's numbers are gonna change with it.

Here, he'd be the starting PF getting 35 minutes a game....until Morey trades him with spare parts for Kevin Love.

Millsap would be great - the only question is what price would be too much to pay for him.
