My parents rented one of these and we moved cross country when I was younger. Cool experience but damn, it took forever.
No need to spend money on boxes. Get your boxes at Walmart around 11 pm, when they are stocking. Grab half a dozen different color duct tape rolls and color code your boxes by room with a strip of duct tape that goes from top to side of the box. When you or the movers are unloading, slap a strip of the correct color duct tape on the door of the room where you want the appropriate boxes. Instead of bubble wrap, use free newspapers. DO get good packing tape and tape dispensers. Don't use giant boxes. 2'x2' should be your maximum size. Get a giant roll of shrink wrap and wrap the hell out of your furniture. Don't trust movers to be professional. Their only requirement for the job was to be able to lift stuff. Be a dick and don't trust them with easy to steal valuables. Where are you moving to?
I, too, got plenty of boxes from Walmart after midnight for free when I was moving. I borrowed a friend's pick up and rented a you-haul and had a few friends help out. I did get a few help from a nearby Fiesta to do some heavy lifting. I believe they asked like $8 an hour and this was like in 2006.
As someone about to move back to the Houston area, I am very interested in hearing this as well. Also, I used Square Cows when i moved last year and loved them: http://squarecowmovers.com/ . I selected them after doing a ton of research, and they were the highest rated choice among people on Yelp. Was 100% satisfied with them. I moved within Austin, but they also have a location in Houston.
Walmart also sells boxes cheap Have a garage sale and get rid of crap. Post stuff for free on Craigslist and people will come take what you don't sell in the garage sale We just moved and I really wish I would have got rid of more crap. Still tons of boxes in the garage Of stuff that will never be used.
Somewhere in the west side of Houston. Thanks for those tips, Xero. We have started wrapping in La Subasta, La Voz, Greensheet, etc. :grin: We might just get a UHaul, but we have some very heavy furniture even in the second story so we would like to minimize risks with them.
Welcome to my neck of the woods. If you ever want to hang out at the Kirkwood/Briar Forest intersection, let me know. You can get some badass deals at Ron's Electronics, and that Food Mart got some good sheit. And every night it's a party at Three Sheets Bar. Some damn good times there. ::EDIT:: Oh and uh, do all the moving in a day or two if possible. I moved slowly over the course of 2 months and it was awful.
Spoilered cuz it's irrelevant to thread and I don't wish to highjack or troll... Spoiler No, I was renting two places at the same time. One in the Medical Center and one where I now reside. For various reasons I couldn't get out of the Med Center lease, so I just had pay the two rents at once for 2.5 months. I have a small Ford and just decided to move everything by myself by making small trips when I had some free time. That was a bad idea. Even worse was that I very quickly realized it was a bad idea, but continued to do it. But after paying too much for rent in the Med Center and too much in West Houston, I was wishing I had just been living with my parents. Good food, free cable, internet and utilities, and minimal (if any) rent. Dafuq was I thinking. I'd have saved up enough to buy a better car and a house by now. Oh well. Also, another moving tip: if you do hire people from Craigslist, don't let them drive your belongings from new place to old place. My sister did that and was out a table and chairs. They showed up with everything else, but the table and chairs were gone. It was bizarre.
We recently moved and there was no way we were going to move furniture ourselves. So we got quotes. Most moving companies charge by the hour for 3 Men and a truck. Most quotes we got were $100 per hour. Pack everything that you possibly can other than furniture and move it yourself. Don't have the movers deal with boxes or packing since again, they charge by the hour. For us the movers were worth it for the furniture. We had some large items that had to be taken apart and then put back together and they did it all.
