Been several times Lin substituted by coach when hes hot first quarter, benched long enough and it made him inconsistent the second half. Perhaps not a big issue but I think thats the main reason if we talk about his inconsistency.

I have no issue with you having whatever opinion you have about the substitution patterns, but one of the reasons why other people go nuts on this forum regarding 'LOF's' is because of exaggerations like what I bolded.

It's perpetuating a myth...kinda like if something is said enough times by a few people, it eventually becomes true to those who are looking for any kind of reason to find fault.

And even if there are Lin threads that are created, there should be no reason for other posters to go bonkers and go on offensives just because someone wants to talk about Lin. They could have just ignored the Lin threads, but they can't and it feels like they're having some sort of road rage or 'roid rage' whenever someone disagrees with their opinion of Lin. Mockery, scornfulness, name-calling...no respect at all.

    It's quite bewildering.

First of all, for all the excuses I've made for Lin, it is at least as equally his fault. He is a professional getting paid millions of dollars and he should not be losing focus like that. And it was not like it was only this game. He goes through that lazy passing phase which I wouldn't even accept from my own son. He's young and liable to do that, but it's frustrating nonetheless. Who hasn't wanted to shake Lin up a bit telling him to wake up and let out his inner dragon.
Lin clearly is a player with two personas and I may have to bust a Bobby Knight on him if I were his coach. Lol. But yes, that's what I mean. His substitution pattern is off and it must affect his players.

Sums it up for me. Thanks. Feels good to get some empathy. I had hoped that I could see some valid substitution patterns posited, other than my own, that made sense to me and workable with our current team taking all our players strengths and weaknesses into account but alas most of it was me being defensive against defensive LOFHs lol. I'm not a LOFHH yet cuz u do see their points but I hope continuous wins and a solid playoff showing will bring everyone together under the banner of Rockets Red.

Been married for awhile too so I know what you mean. Lin is a very sensative subject on here, almost too sensative. For the record, I dont think you are one of the offenders here, but I can see how this could open up yet another can of worms between the McHale hate & the Lin obsession(on both sides) when its sort of unnecessary on the topic of Lin's playing time.

McHale's substitution patern is one thing to be critical of, but even I couldn't tell you when its appropriate to sub in and out late in games with this group of players because you really never know what you are going to get. Alot of it comes down to gut feeling. Lin is clearly the better player than TD most of the time, but I dont think we should just throw water on TD as if he hasn't been a positive for this team.

The guy plays his butt off. Say what you want about him, but he's given this team 100% this year without complaints or drama. I dont see him being here much longer at all if even after the trade deadline, and when he's gone some people on here might wish he was still here if Beverly has a bad stretch of games. TD has been a steady player which is why he has probably got minutes later in games than he should. Its a coach thing I guess.

Not to go on a TD love rant(Ive never been a huge fan), but I hope he's not just getting the hate he gets just because people love Lin so much. I hate to see everyone viewed as the enemy on here just because of the Lin experience.

Saying that TD is not a good PG is not hating him. You don't seem to understand this. TD has been for the most part a valuable player off the bench with his defensive spark and shooting. I think most people feel he's a good backup SG. Running the team is just not his strength.

I dunno about putting Lin back in twice in the same quarter except in very specific situations.. It feels choppy to me. I mean, I have seen it work well, but it doesn't seem to work well with Lin, thus far.
And I'd replace Lin with Beverley not TD, until proven otherwise. Hardens minutes distribution seems ideal though i'd reduce the first and third period minutes to 9 minutes not 10. Every minute counts as we may have to overplay our starters on days when things are close or when our bench is getting outplayed. There's still a chunk of the season left to play and energy conservation becomes key later on.
Someone mentioned trusting Beverley and Douglas together and that's interesting to me as well. I mean I know the theory is to stagger Lin and Hardens minutes but that's an outdated theory now isn't it? They seem to be playing well together and in their correct positions at that.

I think JLin should play around 36 minutes per game. However, I think he should be allowed to be in the game for longer durations before a break. My minutes distribution for a typical game would be like this:

First 3 quarters: JLin plays the first 9 minutes and rest 3 minutes at the end of every quarter (Notice there's a longer break between the end of the 2nd quarter and beginning of the 3rd quarter during the halftime show)

4th quarter: Play the backup PG for the first 3 minutes and have JLin play the last 9 minutes

Adjustments should be made if it's a blowout game (starters get more rest) or a close game (starters play more minutes)

You mean penetrating the paint in the offense? Yeah, I agree that's not his strong suit. However, in the Rockets offense they run, the PG(player who brings the ball up the floor) often doesn't really "initiate" the offense, but will pass the ball off when they bring it up, and move out on the corners. Which is why late it games, it seems like the gameplay is to give the ball to Harden to work, and have the PG move off the ball.

On this team, there really is not a "running the team" PG like a traditional Mark Jackson style PG. Hence why the turnovers are so high. Everyone is moving the ball. Hence why its hard to really be critical of anyone for not being a good enough "floor general" type of PG. Its not even in the nature of the offensive system they run to have a true floor general anyways so why even debate it?

short playing and short break could fit with lin very well. well, harden can play a little longer.

You are more mature than I. And no TD does not deserve any hate. If it sounded bad, that's my bad as TD has been nothing but an awesome guy. I just don't believe that his skillset works as a pg as I envision it. Maybe on the Miami heat, he could be deadly, but when we thrive in the run n gun quick passing game, we need a floor general who can see and creates plays in transition and as we don't have real post up players outside of Asik, we need a pg who can break down defenses for a penetrate and dish and Toney doesn't fit that role well. Fortunately, we've had Harden do that for him, but at the cost of excessive turnovers from our 2 spot. TD is a good dude and he's played well for us. We'll see if Beverley can pan out, and although Beverley seems a bit wild out there, he's very similar to TD in skillset and play style while having a floor game.

Recently it's been different. Lin's been running and initiating the plays. A good example is the first half of the last game. Lin dominated that ball and put everyone in their right spots in rhythm. In our offense, recently, Lin has been coming off screens to get the ball back up top to initiate either a pnr or a pass to a curling parsons or Delfino with harden dominating every other play. Previously, it was all given to harden. There was no play called to get the ball back up to Lin up top, an no screens as well. The coaching staff has seen the potential of Lin's pnr game and there's been a very distinct difference.

Yeah, its been more frequent, but you really dont want anyone getting "sticky"(as McHale calls it) with the ball if they are going to run this offense. If the ball was in Lin's hands 100% of the time on offense in this system, we have a problem.

Still, at some point during the season teams are going to figure out how to turn the Rockets into a half court team, and the team will be forced to run some more traditional half court plays. Then it will be interesting to see how good this backcourt can adjust in the half court in a more traditional half court pick & roll. I think even more important that the backcourt play will be the play of Asik as the roller to the basket.

Harden has had a career year with career high TOs.

I see you ran into the problem I ran into...which is trying not to sub the same guy out and then in again in the same quarter.

Couple of things though. I'm not sure Harden would like it if he is not fully involved in the usually crucial 4th quarter. 8 mins might be too little time for him to take over and win the game if the score is getting run up by the opponent. That's why I put him in for the full 4th quarter so that as the star, he can take responsibility for the win.

Also, Lin is quite the rhythm and momentum player. I'm not sure we'll get the best from him by taking him in and out like that. And unless Beverly and Douglas prove that they are big time players in the 4th, I would prefer the starters to finish out the game by playing most of the 4th quarter.

But hey, you made the 36 mins for Harden work out with your idea. Good job.

I think it ends up at least 2 mins. I know I press the forward button on League Pass at least twice (each press is 1 min) if not more.

I actually don't mind your minutes distribution for Lin.
If you saw my post earlier, I had him tagged at 32 minutes because I think his style of play takes up a lot of energy as he plays both ends hard. I rather see 32 minutes of intense Lin, than 36 minutes of pacing Lin.

Harden can play longer because he doesn't put out as much energy on D, and his explosiveness comes in controlled spurts on offense, without too much running and cutting.
